A 2,000 lb × 0.5 lb pull force scale can turn a winch, cable, hoist or industrial pull fixture into a measurable test instead of a subjective “feels strong enough” check. The MNM S-type system combines a 2,000 lb force range, Peak Hold, rechargeable readout and RS-232 output in a format suited to controlled tension and compression work.

Why an S-Type Load Cell Works Well for Pull Tests

S-type cells place threaded load points on opposite ends of a strain-gauged body, making them convenient for straight-line tension fixtures as well as compression setups. The goal is axial loading: the force should pass through the cell instead of creating a side load or bending moment. That makes fixture alignment one of the biggest contributors to repeatable pull-force data.

Winch Pull Testing

For a controlled winch comparison, the load cell can be placed in an engineered test path between rated connection hardware. Peak Hold captures the highest force reached during a pull, while live mode helps show how force changes over the stroke. This is useful for comparing winch settings, checking consistency after service or characterizing a product in a controlled test fixture. It is not a substitute for proper rigging engineering, guarding or rated anchors.

Cable and Wire-Rope Tension Checks

In cable applications, the scale can measure inline tension when the geometry allows a direct connection. The 0.5 lb increment is fine enough to see modest changes against a 2,000 lb range. For repeatable comparison, use the same attachment geometry, same loading rate and same point in the cable system each time; pulley friction and changing angles can otherwise make two tests look different even when the cable itself has not changed.

Hoist and Suspended-Force Measurement

The hoist, shackles, hooks, anchors, eye bolts, frame and every other load-bearing component need independent working-load limits and inspection. Keep personnel out of the potential fall/load path and follow the applicable lifting procedure for the site.

Breakaway and Peak Pull Force

Peak Hold is particularly useful for breakaway force: pulling a latch, extracting a fitted component, opening a mechanism, testing a connector retention force or finding the maximum effort before motion starts. Because dynamic peaks depend on loading rate, define how quickly the test is performed and use the same method each time. A repeatable method usually produces more useful data than chasing an isolated maximum number.

Using RS-232 for Production or Test Records

With compatible equipment and the correct communication settings for the delivered indicator, readings can be transferred to a printer, terminal or data-collection workflow. Before automating, verify baud rate, data format and command behavior from the exact indicator manual because MNM notes that the package may be supplied with different readout models.

Build a Repeatable Pull-Test Procedure

Define the fixture, direction, preload, loading rate, target or stop condition and whether you will record live force, steady force or peak force. Verify zero before each series. Run a known-force check on a reasonable interval. Photograph or document fixture geometry if tests need to be reproduced months later. Those simple controls often improve data quality more than changing to a higher-resolution display.
