A&D EJ-6100 counting functions turn the 6100 g × 0.1 g balance into a practical parts and process tool by combining ACAI counting, percentage weighing, accumulation, multiple units, portable battery operation, and an optional underhook. The key is to match each function to a task the balance can physically resolve rather than assuming every menu feature will work equally well with every sample.

Counting Capacity and Minimum Unit Weight

A&D’s legacy EJ brochure lists a maximum count of 61,000 pieces and a 0.1 g minimum unit weight for the EJ-6100. Those are published capability limits, not a promise that any 0.1 g part will count perfectly in real production. Unit-to-unit variation, drafts, vibration, sample handling, and the number of pieces used to establish average unit weight all influence counting performance.

Sample Sizes: 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 Pieces

The EJ generation offers those standard sample sizes. Larger samples generally produce a better estimate of average unit weight when parts vary. For critical inventory, start with a larger representative sample and compare the final calculated count to a known hand count before relying on the procedure for full bins.

How ACAI Helps

Automatic Counting Accuracy Improvement refines the stored average unit weight as additional pieces are added under the function’s conditions. This helps reduce sampling error. It cannot eliminate genuine part-weight variation. If parts come from different suppliers or production lots, re-establish unit weight instead of reusing an old average indefinitely.

Percent Weighing

Percent mode stores a reference weight as 100%. The EJ-6100 then displays later loads relative to that reference. A&D’s legacy table lists a 0.1% minimum percentage display and a 10 g minimum 100% reference weight for the larger EJ group. Applications include formulation comparison, coating pickup, drying demonstrations, material loss/gain, and classroom exercises.

Accumulation

Accumulation allows multiple readings to be summed. Use it when separate containers or portions must be totaled but cannot all sit on the pan together. Establish a clear procedure for when the accumulator is started, recorded, and cleared. A forgotten previous total can create a large process error even when every individual weighing is correct.

Underhook Weighing

A&D lists EJ-07 as the underhook option for EJ-3000, EJ-4100, and EJ-6100. Underhook weighing suspends the sample below the balance and can support density/buoyancy demonstrations or awkward objects. The balance must be mounted securely with clearance below, and the suspended setup must not introduce side loads, swinging, or contact with surrounding structures. Confirm legacy accessory availability before ordering.

Four-AA Battery Operation

The EJ-6100 can operate on four AA batteries. The legacy brochure states approximately 70 hours with alkaline cells and the backlight off. This makes the balance convenient for classrooms, cycle counts, and temporary stations. Carry spare batteries for critical work and replace cells as a set. A low-voltage problem can cause shutdown or unstable operation and should not be confused with calibration error.

Backlight and Auto Power Off

The backlit LCD improves visibility, while automatic power-off can conserve batteries. For a fixed process, decide whether auto-off is helpful or whether it creates delays because the balance repeatedly needs to wake and stabilize. Battery-life comparisons should always note backlight conditions because A&D’s published runtime is based on backlight-off operation.
