A&D HW-60KC calibration and troubleshooting starts with installation, because a 150 lb platform displaying 0.01 lb increments can reveal leveling, vibration and platform-contact problems that a coarser warehouse scale may hide. A&D's manual instructs users to install the scale on a solid level surface, power it on about 30 minutes before use, calibrate before use and after relocation, and periodically confirm weighing accuracy. The goal is not to recalibrate every time the last digit moves; it is to identify whether the problem is environment, mechanics, power, reference weights or a true span error.

Prepare the scale: level, clear and warm for about 30 minutes
Center the bubble level using all four feet and make sure the platform cannot rock. Confirm that the pan is seated correctly and that no wall, conveyor rail, cable, hose or tote touches the weighing structure. Remove the protective film if the scale is new. A&D's manual says to connect power and turn the display on about 30 minutes before use. If the scale moved from a truck, freezer, hot warehouse or outdoor cart, allow additional time for the entire structure and load cell to reach the working environment before calibration.
Use known calibration/test weights—not random shop objects
For controlled work, use known weights whose tolerance and history are appropriate for the process. A 150 lb scale should not be judged solely with a tiny object near zero when normal loads are 80–140 lb. Use one or more test points representing the actual working range. Center the load and let it stabilize. If traceability is required, use weights with suitable certificates or documented calibration status. An unverified dumbbell, shipping box or material container may be useful only as a rough functional check, not as a calibration standard.
External zero and span calibration
HW-60KC supports external calibration. Follow the HW/HV-C manual's calibration mode to establish zero with the platform empty and then span using the correct known mass for the configured capacity/unit. Keep the reference load centered and stable. Do not lean on the bench or let another object contact the platform while the calibration value is being captured. After calibration, return to normal weighing, remove all load and confirm that zero is restored before beginning independent verification.
Verification after calibration: low, mid and high range
Calibration is an adjustment; verification is evidence that the scale is suitable for the job. Check at least one independent known load after calibration. For higher-confidence process work, test multiple points such as a lower working load, a mid-range load and a high load close to the normal maximum. Repeat key points several times and record the results when the quality system requires it. If one part of the range fails while another passes, do not simply re-run span calibration indefinitely; investigate linearity, mechanical condition and the reference weights.
Corner-loading and eccentric-load checks
Boxes and totes are rarely placed perfectly in the center, so eccentric-load performance matters. Put the same known weight in the center and at representative positions around the 330 × 424 mm platform, keeping the load safe and stable. Large differences can indicate pan seating, a twisted frame, a rocking foot, debris, side contact or load-cell damage. Calibration at the center cannot correct a mechanical corner-loading problem. If position effects exceed the process tolerance, correct the installation or service the scale.
Unstable readings: fix the installation before calibration
Common sources include floor vibration, rolling carts, compressors, conveyors, fans moving a large lightweight box, a flexible table, a rocking foot or product that continues to move inside the container. The 0.01 lb display makes small disturbances visible. Watch whether the reading changes when nearby equipment starts or when an operator touches the bench. If it does, improve the station or use appropriate filtering before recalibrating. A span adjustment cannot remove changing forces from the weighing structure.
Zero drift or failure to return to zero
Unload the platform completely. Check for labels, stretch wrap, food debris or packaging trapped under the pan. Confirm that the platform is not touching a wall or guide. Check the bubble level and allow the scale to stabilize after a temperature change. Press ZERO only when the platform is truly unloaded and stable. If a residual remains or returns repeatedly under controlled conditions, verify with known weights and arrange service rather than repeatedly forcing zero and hiding a mechanical problem.
IP65 base cleaning without damaging the terminal
The HW-60KC base is IP65, and A&D's manual permits cleaning the base with gentle running tap water. It also says the display unit is not water resistant. Protect the terminal and electrical connections, use the display cover, avoid high-pressure spray and allow the base to dry before weighing. Do not scrub the base with a hard brush that can damage surfaces/seals. If water enters the display or connector area, remove the scale from critical service until dry and verified.
Battery and AC-power troubleshooting
HW-60KC uses four D cells or the specified AC adapter. Replace all four batteries together when the low-battery indicator appears. A&D lists about 1,200 hours with alkaline cells when the backlight and comparator LEDs are off; actual runtime drops when those features are heavily used. If instability appears only on battery power, replace the set and inspect contacts. If it occurs only on AC, verify the correct adapter and eliminate loose connectors, overloaded power strips or unstable extension circuits.
Communication and relay troubleshooting
If the local display is correct but a PC receives nothing or garbled data, treat it as an interface problem first. For optional RS-232C, match baud, parity, data length, stop bits, cable pinout and transmission mode. For USB, confirm the correct interface/driver and receiving software. For the relay option, verify programmed comparator thresholds and external wiring. A communications fault should not trigger a calibration change unless an independent known-weight check also shows the local weighing result is wrong.
Calibration cannot turn HW-60KC into an NTEP trade scale
Current NTEP CoC 17-099A3 is for HV-C/HV-CP/HV-CWP models and does not list HW-60KC. Calibrating HW-60KC perfectly does not change its certification status. If the application requires legal-for-trade use at 150 lb, choose the HV-60KC certified configuration, whose Class III pound intervals are 0–30 lb × 0.01 lb, 30–60 lb × 0.02 lb and 60–150 lb × 0.05 lb. Calibration quality and legal approval are separate questions.
