How to Calibrate an IDS-672-25K-CT 25,000 lb Load Cell

Calibrating the IDS-672-25K-CT means calibrating the installed load cell and its connected indicator or signal conditioner together. The load cell itself does not have buttons or a universal calibration menu. The correct procedure is mechanical verification, electrical verification, zero, known-force span and independent checks across the intended working range.

Confirm the Physical Sensor First

Before applying force, verify the label and certificate identify the 25,000 lb IDS-672-25K-CT. MNM’s public page has one inconsistent copied “2k” description line despite the 25k title, SKU and model field. For a high-force setup, the physical label and certificate should govern the installation.

Step 1: Inspect Alignment and Fixture Contact

Make sure the load is centered through the intended axis, the interfaces are flat and rigid, the center-thread connection is properly seated, and the sensor is not side-loaded. Establish overload stops or machine limits separately. Calibration cannot compensate for a fixture that bends or applies force to the edge of the disk.

Step 2: Confirm Electrical Specifications and Wiring

Obtain the exact cell sensitivity, bridge resistance, excitation requirement and conductor assignment. The public MNM listing does not publish these details, so do not borrow mV/V or color codes from another capacity. Configure the indicator/amplifier using the actual sensor documentation and verify stable zero before applying calibration force.

Step 3: Establish Zero in the Finished Fixture

With the fixture assembled but no test force applied beyond any intentional preload, allow the system to stabilize and set zero. Repeat the zero check after cycling a small load a few times. A zero that shifts after each cycle may indicate settling adapters, friction, cable strain or mechanical binding.

Step 4: Apply a Known Calibration Force

Use a traceable reference force appropriate to the application: a calibrated force machine, certified reference load cell or properly characterized dead-weight/lever setup. Enter the known force through the connected electronics’ span function. Use a meaningful calibration point rather than a tiny fraction of capacity when practical and safe.

Step 5: Verify Linearity, Repeatability and Return to Zero

Check several independent points, including points not used for span. Repeat one mid-range point multiple times. Load upward through the range and then reduce force to see whether loading and unloading values agree closely enough for the intended use. Finish by removing force and confirming zero returns consistently.

When to Recalibrate

Recalibrate after replacing the cell, changing the indicator/amplifier, modifying the mechanical adapter stack, moving the sensor to a different fixture, repairing wiring or experiencing a suspected overload. For production or quality systems, set a periodic verification interval based on process risk and historical stability rather than waiting for obvious error.
