How to Calibrate an MNM Four-Cell 2,500 lb Stainless Floor Scale Kit

Calibrating a four-cell shear-beam scale is a two-stage job: first make all four corners contribute equally, then calibrate the complete indicator for zero and span. If a platform reads differently depending on where the same test load is placed, a span adjustment alone will not fix it. Leveling, mechanical freedom, cable integrity and junction-box trimming come first.

Step 1: inspect and level the platform

Make sure all four feet contact the floor or mounting structure, the deck is not rocking, debris is not trapped under the frame and no check rod, bumper, ramp or surrounding structure is binding the deck. For hoppers and tanks, inspect piping and flexible connections. Confirm the cell bolts, spacers and feet are installed consistently and that each cell is loaded in its intended direction.

Step 2: verify wiring and individual cell response

Confirm red/black excitation and green/white signal polarity against the MNM listing and the junction-box wiring. Inspect each cable for crush damage, moisture intrusion or loose terminals. If one corner is grossly different, troubleshoot that cell and mechanical mount before touching the trim potentiometers.

Step 3: corner test and trim

Place the same suitable test load near each load-cell location in a consistent pattern. Record all four readings. Use the junction-box trim procedure to bring the corners together, following the box manufacturer’s direction for whether trim reduces or increases a cell’s contribution. Repeat the corner sequence after every adjustment until the readings agree within the target tolerance. Step 4: zero and span the indicator

After corner balance, unload the platform and establish zero using the exact indicator’s calibration procedure. Apply a known traceable test load, enter the reference value and perform span calibration. Remove the load and confirm return-to-zero, then verify at one or more intermediate points. If the scale is used commercially under Legal-for-Trade requirements, service, sealing and local weights-and-measures rules may apply after calibration.

Troubleshooting corner errors

One bad corner can come from a damaged cell, wrong wiring, loose mounting, cable damage or mechanical binding. Two adjacent corners reading high or low can point to frame twist or leveling. Corners that change after moving the platform often indicate feet or floor support issues. A scale that corners well but reads wrong everywhere usually needs zero/span calibration rather than further trim adjustment.
