The MNM Scales 100,000 lb load cell for structural, bearing and machinery compression testing provides a low-profile way to measure large static or slowly changing reaction forces inside heavy fixtures and machines. The LPD-100K disk sensor is particularly useful where the structure cannot accommodate a tall load cell but the engineering team still needs a direct force reading from a defined compression point.

Structural Reaction Force Measurement

A reaction point is where a structure transfers load into a support, fixture or foundation. Placing a compression load cell at that point can show how much force actually passes through one support during a controlled test. This is useful in prototype frames, test stands, temporary supports, jack reactions, machine installations and R&D fixtures where load distribution matters. Multiple sensors may be needed when the goal is to understand several reaction points rather than one.

Why Eccentric Loading Matters

Low-profile compression cells work best when force is centered and distributed through the intended loading area. If the upper reaction surface tilts or the force enters near one edge, the cell can see a combination of compression and moment rather than clean axial loading. Use rigid platens, guides and alignment features to control the load path. If the application inherently produces eccentric force, the fixture should be designed by someone who can account for that loading rather than assuming a centered calibration remains valid.

Static Tests, Proof Loads and Measurement Records

For controlled static work, establish the zero condition, apply load gradually, record the target or peak, then unload and confirm the system returns close to zero. Record the load-cell identity/certificate, indicator, test date, fixture, applied force and any displacement or pressure data needed to reproduce the test. A load-cell certificate documents the measuring component; it does not by itself certify the structure, bearing assembly or machine being tested.

When RS232 and External Logging Help

The OP-901 includes RS232C. External logging is useful when the team wants to compare load with time, displacement, pressure or multiple process variables rather than recording a single hand-written number. Select a sampling and logging method that matches the speed of the event; the OP-901 manual lists a 10-sample-per-second A/D conversion rate for the indicator electronics.

Can this measure the load under a machine support?

Yes, in a properly engineered temporary or permanent load path where the sensor is centered, fully supported and protected from side loading. Permanent installations need additional environmental and fatigue considerations.

Can it measure bearing preload?

It can measure compressive reaction in a bearing/preload fixture when the full preload passes through the sensor and the assembly stays within the system’s range.

Does the certificate certify my structure?

No. The certificate relates to the load cell. Structural capacity or machinery certification depends on the design, materials, procedures and applicable engineering or regulatory requirements.
