MNM MS-1-5K Replacement Guide: How to Match a 5,000 lb S-Type Load Cell

Replacing a 5,000 lb S-type load cell requires more than matching the capacity printed on the label. The MNM MS-1-5K has published electrical characteristics—3.00 ± 0.01 mV/V output, 385 ± 15 ohm input resistance, 350 ± 5 ohm output resistance, 10 V excitation and a four-wire red/black/green/white cable—but mechanical dimensions, thread size, load direction, cable routing, environmental needs and the indicator’s calibration range also have to fit the original system. Do not treat another 5,000 lb S-beam as an automatic drop-in replacement unless those details have been checked.
1. Match Capacity and Application Direction
Start with the required 5,000 lb capacity and confirm whether the original installation uses tension, compression or both. Review the normal working load, preload and any dynamic peaks. The replacement should not be selected simply because its safe-overload number is high enough; rated capacity should cover the intended measurement range with appropriate engineering margin.
2. Check Physical Envelope and Threads
Measure overall height/length, body width and thickness, thread diameter, thread pitch, thread depth and the space available for cable exit. Verify that rod ends, eye bolts, clevises or adapters mate correctly. Even when two sensors have similar electrical specs, a different center-to-center dimension can change a machine fixture or create unwanted preload. Use manufacturer dimensional drawings when available rather than measuring only from a product photo.
3. Compare Rated Output and Bridge Resistance
The MS-1-5K is a nominal 3 mV/V class sensor with 385 ± 15 ohm input resistance and 350 ± 5 ohm output resistance. A replacement with very different sensitivity can exceed an indicator’s expected signal range or reduce usable resolution. Bridge resistance also affects how much excitation current the indicator must supply, especially in multi-cell systems. Confirm the electronics can support the chosen sensor before wiring it in.
4. Never Assume Wire Colors Match Another Brand
For the MNM MS-1-5K, red is +excitation, black is -excitation, green is +signal and white is -signal. Other load-cell manufacturers may use different colors. Match wire function to terminal function, not color-to-color from memory. If replacing a six-wire cell with a four-wire cell, the indicator’s sense configuration also needs attention.

5. Compare Accuracy, Temperature and Environment
MNM publishes ±0.02%FS nonlinearity, ±0.02%FS hysteresis, ±0.01%FS repeatability, a compensated range of -10°C to 50°C and operating range of -20°C to 60°C. A replacement used outdoors, in washdown service, around corrosive chemicals or in a legal-for-trade system may require approvals or environmental sealing beyond the basic electrical match. Confirm the requirements of the original application rather than assuming alloy steel is suitable everywhere.
6. Recalibrate After Replacement
Even if the new cell has the same nominal capacity and sensitivity, perform system calibration after replacement. Individual cells differ slightly in rated output and zero balance, and the mechanical installation itself influences the final result. Establish no-load zero, apply a traceable known force for span, then verify multiple points and repeatability before returning the system to service.
