25,000 lb Compression Scale: 1 lb vs 2 lb Resolution
When two force scales share a 25,000 lb capacity, the display increment can be one of the most visible differences. A 25,000 lb x 1 lb system shows one-pound steps, while a 25,000 lb x 2 lb system shows two-pound steps. Finer indication can be valuable, but it should be selected based on real process needs and system stability rather than assuming more digits always mean more accuracy.
Displayed counts
At full range, a 1 lb increment provides 25,000 displayed counts and a 2 lb increment provides 12,500 displayed counts. That difference affects what small changes you can see on the screen, but it does not directly state uncertainty, repeatability or legal metrology performance.
Choose 1 lb increments when
You need to compare relatively small force changes during press setup or process development.
The fixture and reference calibration are stable enough that one-pound changes are meaningful.
You are logging or trending force and want finer visual discrimination.
A specification or internal test method calls for tighter displayed resolution.
Choose 2 lb increments when
The process naturally fluctuates by several pounds or more and one-pound changes add noise rather than useful information.
Your pass/fail limits are broad relative to the display increment.
You prioritize a calmer display for repetitive high-force shop-floor checks.
Resolution is not accuracy
A one-pound display step cannot overcome a poorly aligned load cell, flexible reaction frame, temperature drift, unstable hydraulic force, hysteresis, calibration error or a reference standard with insufficient accuracy. Choose the resolution only after considering the complete measurement system and the smallest force change that is actually significant to the process.
Calibration implications
Both systems require a stable zero, known-force span and multi-point verification. Finer display resolution can make zero drift and mechanical variation more visible, which is useful diagnostically but may also make an unstable fixture appear busier. Use the indicator's correct division and capacity settings and calibrate with a reference appropriate to the required tolerance.
Example decision
If a press-fit process normally peaks around 12,000 lb and a 25-50 lb change matters, either 1 lb or 2 lb indication may provide more than enough displayed discrimination; fixture repeatability and calibration may dominate the decision. If a controlled laboratory fixture needs to distinguish much smaller changes and proves stable under verification, the 1 lb configuration becomes more attractive.
FAQ
Does 1 lb resolution make the sensor more accurate?
No. It changes the displayed graduation. Actual measurement performance still depends on the sensor, electronics, mechanics and calibration.
Can I simply change the LP7516 division from 2 lb to 1 lb?
An indicator may allow configurable divisions, but a usable 1 lb configuration must be supported by the load-cell signal, capacity settings, stability and calibration. Do not assume changing one menu value creates a validated new specification.
Which is better for Peak Hold?
Both can capture a peak if the indicator supports it. The better choice depends on how small a peak difference matters and how repeatable the loading cycle is.
