5,000 lb Load Cell Indicator Guide: Peak Hold, RS-232, Battery & Data

5,000 lb load cell indicator features determine how useful the force sensor becomes in daily work. The MNM 5,000 lb × 1 lb listing includes Peak Hold, zero, gross/net, accumulation, printing, counting, check weighing, auto-hold, lb/kg selection, RS-232, gravity adjustment and rechargeable power. Those features support very different workflows, so configure them around the measurement goal rather than enabling everything at once.

First identify the actual indicator

MNM explicitly notes that the system may be supplied with different indicator models or brands. That matters for calibration menus, serial settings, key combinations and printer commands. Use the label on the actual readout as the source for model-specific instructions. The load cell and capacity may be the same while the user interface and communications are different.

Peak Hold versus auto-hold

Peak Hold is intended to preserve the maximum force seen during a changing event such as breakaway, pull or press-fit force. Auto-hold generally targets a stable reading so an operator can record it without watching the display continuously. They answer different questions. If a test should report the steady force after motion stops, Peak Hold may capture an irrelevant transient; if the test needs the breakaway maximum, a stable hold can miss it.

RS-232 and printing workflows

RS-232 can connect a compatible indicator to a printer, computer, terminal or data-acquisition workflow. Before buying cables or writing software, confirm connector type, baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, output format and whether transmission is continuous, command-driven or triggered by the Print key. An RS-232 port does not by itself guarantee compatibility with a particular USB adapter, application or printer.

Battery operation and field use

The listing specifies a rechargeable 6V battery and power supply, which is useful for portable test stands and locations away from an outlet. Establish a charging routine and check battery condition before critical tests. If readings or display behavior change as the battery becomes depleted, stop and investigate rather than accepting questionable data. Use the correct supplied power source and protect connectors from physical strain.

Counting and check weighing on a force system

Counting and check-weigh functions are common weighing-indicator features, even when the connected sensor is used mainly for force testing. They may be useful in a multi-purpose installation, but they are not substitutes for force-specific test logic. Keep unit settings and tare/zero procedures documented so an operator cannot accidentally leave a production force fixture in a mode intended for general weighing.

FAQ

Does RS-232 mean USB? No. A serial-to-USB adapter may be used in some systems, but electrical and software settings must match. Which hold mode should I use? Peak Hold for the maximum event; a stable/auto-hold function when the goal is a settled reading. Can I print calibration results automatically? That depends on the actual indicator, printer and output configuration. Why does the online manual not match my keys? MNM says different indicator models can be supplied; identify your actual unit. Can battery voltage affect operation? A weak or failing battery can cause operational problems; verify power before critical measurements. Should I change gravity adjustment for force testing? Do not change configuration without understanding the actual indicator and calibration requirement; preserve a calibrated setup unless a documented procedure calls for it.
