How the BM-5D smart range works

This is useful when a container or tare is needed but the actual material being measured is very small.

Smart range is not the same as claiming 0.001 mg resolution across the entire 5.2 g capacity. When comparing a BM-5D listing, always read both capacity/readability pairs rather than relying on a shortened title such as “5 g x 0.001 mg.”

Internal calibration and static elimination

At microgram resolution, small environmental changes can become meaningful. The motor-driven internal calibration weight helps the balance adjust sensitivity without requiring the operator to place a tiny external weight on the pan. Automatic self-calibration can respond to temperature changes, but good laboratory practice still includes leveling the balance, allowing it to acclimate, verifying it with suitable reference weights and documenting checks required by the laboratory’s procedure.

The built-in ionizer is especially useful for plastic vessels, filters, powders and other samples that can hold an electrostatic charge. Neutralizing static reduces drifting or biased readings, but it does not replace control of drafts, vibration, humidity or sample temperature.

Can the BM-5D really read one microgram?

Does the BM-5D calibrate itself?
