A&D EW-12Ki vs EK-12Ki is a choice between a Class III multi-interval scale that gets coarser as weight increases and a Class II fixed 1 g balance across the full 12 kg range. Current CoC 04-019A3 lists EW-12Ki at 3,000 g × 1 g, 6,000 g × 2 g and 12,000 g × 5 g in multi-interval Class III operation, while EK-12Ki is 12,000 g × 1 g Class II. Both can be excellent legal-for-trade balances when their class/configuration fits the application, but the fixed resolution, underhook approval and intended transaction can make one much better than the other.

EW-12Ki: finer at low loads, coarser at high loads

EW-12Ki displays 1 g through 3 kg, 2 g through 6 kg and 5 g through 12 kg. It is Class III. This can be efficient when most transactions are light but occasional loads need the full 12 kg capacity. The tradeoff is that an 8 kg or 12 kg load cannot be read in 1 g legal increments on the multi-interval configuration.

EK-12Ki: 1 g throughout 12 kg

EK-12Ki is Class II at 12,000 g × 1 g. A user weighing 10 kg still sees a 1 g division. That can be important in higher-value commercial or laboratory applications where the finer fixed interval is justified and approved. It also simplifies SOPs because the displayed division does not change with load range.

Underhook NTEP difference

A&D’s accessory page lists underhook compatibility for both models, but CoC 04-019A3 grants NTEP under-scale approval only to EK-6000i and EK-12Ki. Therefore EK-12Ki has the certificate-supported trade underhook capability; EW-12Ki’s underhook should be treated as a process/non-trade configuration under this certificate. This is a major distinction for density or suspended commercial methods.

Counting restriction applies to trade use

CoC 04-019A3 states that the counting feature is not legal for trade for the family. Both balances can count parts internally, but the calculated piece count is not the approved commercial function. Use the certified weight function for legal transactions and keep inventory counting as a separate process workflow.

Which should you buy?

Choose EW-12Ki when Class III is appropriate and you want 1 g resolution for lighter loads while preserving 12 kg capacity at a coarser upper interval. Choose EK-12Ki when Class II and a fixed 1 g division through the full 12 kg range are important, or when NTEP-approved under-scale weighing is required. In both cases, confirm local legal requirements and the exact delivered configuration before placing the device into commerce.
