Start with the Installation
Confirm a solid, level support surface and adequate clearance around the pan. The indicator pole should be secure. No package, bin, cable, conveyor edge, or wall should touch the live platform. A&D recommends a stable environment and about 30 minutes of powered warm-up before important use. Many weighing errors are caused by installation conditions rather than calibration data.
Verify All Relevant Ranges
Because this is a multi-interval scale, a single 20 lb test does not fully represent a process that also weighs 400 lb totes. Select appropriate reference weights and test points based on the operating range and regulatory/quality requirements. Observe whether the scale repeats at the same load and whether results remain acceptable as the load crosses into the middle and upper ranges.
Check Corner Loading
Use a suitable test load and compare readings at representative platform positions according to the approved service or quality procedure. Large differences can indicate mechanical binding, platform damage, loose hardware, or a load-cell/structure problem. Do not compensate for a corner-load issue by changing span calibration; that can make one point appear correct while leaving the mechanical fault unresolved.
Zero and Tare Problems
If zero will not stabilize, remove all load and inspect for objects touching the platform, vibration, airflow, unstable flooring, temperature transition, or cable tension. If net weight looks wrong, confirm whether tare or preset tare is active and whether the correct container value is being used. Power and Battery Troubleshooting
Replace all four D batteries as a matched set when the low-battery indication appears. If resets or intermittent operation occur on AC, inspect the approved adapter and outlet. Power problems can also interrupt interface transmissions, so a missing data record does not necessarily mean the load cell or calibration has failed.
USB and RS-232 Troubleshooting
For a communication failure, verify the installed option, cable, PC port, driver/software, serial settings, output trigger, and expected format. Test whether the scale itself displays correct stable weight before investigating software. If the local display is correct but the computer record is wrong, the problem is likely downstream of the weighing function.
Comparator Relay and External Control
If external lights or buzzers do not match the scale display, test all comparator states locally first, then inspect relay option setup and wiring. Do not use a general comparator output as a safety-rated control unless the complete system is engineered for that purpose. For regulated transaction records, preserve the actual legal weight value rather than only a pass/fail signal.
When to Call Qualified Service
Call service when the scale fails required known-weight tolerances, range transition performance is questionable, corner loading is inconsistent, seals or identification are damaged, the scale has suffered impact/overload, or protected metrological adjustment is needed. For an NTEP commercial scale, a documented qualified adjustment is preferable to an undocumented menu change that may affect legal status.
