Its main advantage is fine process resolution on a 330 × 424 mm platform without stepping through the coarser intervals used by A&D's legal-for-trade HV version. The exact NTEP answer matters here because online listings are inconsistent: the current NCWM Certificate of Conformance 17-099A3 covers the HV-C, HV-CP and HV-CWP series and lists HV-60KC at 30/60/150 lb multi-interval capacities. It does not list HW-60KC. Therefore the MNM HW-60KC should be treated as a non-NTEP high-resolution process scale; buyers who need legal-for-trade use should choose HV-60KC or another explicitly certified configuration.

Why the NTEP information online is confusing
A&D markets HV-C and HW-C together as one platform-scale family, and some current product pages repeat a generic “triple-range NTEP legal-for-trade bench scale” bullet even on HW model pages. Multiple distributors copy the same family text, which is why searches can incorrectly suggest that HW-60KC itself is NTEP. The controlling certification document is more specific: current CoC 17-099A3 is titled for HV-C, HV-CP and HV-CWP Series. Its model table lists HV-15KC, HV-60KC and HV-200KC variants; no HW model appears. For certification questions, the certificate model table is stronger evidence than reused family marketing copy.
The legal-for-trade alternative: HV-60KC, Class III, CoC 17-099A3
HV-60KC is the certified 60 kg / 150 lb sibling. Current NCWM CoC 17-099A3, issued August 1, 2024, identifies the HV-C/HV-CP/HV-CWP series as Class III with nmax 3000. For HV-60KC the certified ranges are 0–15 kg × 0.005 kg, 15–30 kg × 0.01 kg, and 30–60 kg × 0.02 kg. In pounds they are 0–30 lb × 0.01 lb, 30–60 lb × 0.02 lb, and 60–150 lb × 0.05 lb. The certificate also lists ounce intervals of 0–480 oz × 0.2 oz, 480–960 oz × 0.5 oz, and 960–2400 oz × 1 oz. That is why HW-60KC can show 0.01 lb all the way to 150 lb for internal process work while HV-60KC automatically moves to larger legal-for-trade intervals as the load increases.
High-resolution process weighing versus multi-interval trade weighing
HW-60KC is a single-range high-resolution model. A&D's manual states that most HW models use roughly 1/10,000 resolution, while HV models use multi-interval operation. In practical terms, a 110 lb production bin still displays in 0.01 lb increments on HW-60KC. The HV-60KC trade model, by contrast, displays 0.05 lb increments in the 60–150 lb range because that is the certified Class III interval. Fine process resolution is useful for formulation, fill checks and internal QA, but it should not be confused with legal metrology approval. The appropriate scale depends on what the weight is used for, not simply which display shows more decimals.
Platform construction and the real IP65 boundary
The medium HW-60KC platform uses a stainless SUS430 pan over an industrial base. A&D rates the scale base IP65 and uses a Gore-Tex-style membrane to protect the load-cell area from dust and water. The instruction manual separately states that the display unit is not water resistant and should be protected with its cover. That distinction matters in washdown or wet-production areas: the base can be cleaned with gentle running tap water according to the manual, but the terminal, keypad, cable connections and power accessories should not be treated as waterproof. Protect the display from spray and allow the base to dry before use.
Installation: level, cable protection and 30-minute warm-up
A&D's installation procedure for HW-60KC places it in the medium-platform group. During assembly, avoid pulling or pinching the load-cell cable, install the pan, secure the pole correctly, place the scale on a solid surface and adjust the four leveling feet until the bubble level is centered. The manual calls for connecting power and turning the display on about 30 minutes before use. It also advises calibrating before first use and after moving the scale to another location. In a production area, give the platform enough clearance that boxes, totes or conveyor guides cannot touch nearby structures and bypass part of the load.

The family is designed for fast industrial weighing and A&D markets approximately one-second to 1.5-second stabilization under suitable conditions. The tricolor comparator lets an operator recognize under, accept and over conditions without interpreting every digit. The 10-key input simplifies target and tare entry. For repetitive packing, establish lower/target/upper limits and lock unnecessary keys so operators cannot accidentally alter the setup. If a container is always used, preset tare can speed the process; if containers vary, weigh each tare rather than assuming all packaging is identical.
Counting and accumulation
HW-60KC supports piece counting and accumulation. Counting converts total mass into piece count after a representative unit mass is established; it works best when individual parts are reasonably uniform and the sample used to establish unit mass is large enough. Accumulation can total repeated weighments and store up to hundreds of entries depending on the configured function. These modes are useful in fastener inventory, kitting, receiving and batch assembly. They do not turn the scale into a certified counting system for commercial sale by piece or weight.

Type C models such as HW-60KC can operate from the AC adapter or four D-cell batteries. RS-232C supports bidirectional communication and command control; USB simplifies PC connection; the relay option can drive external process signaling. Before integrating with software or a PLC, document units, decimal position, stable/unstable data behavior and the output command format so downstream records cannot misinterpret the scale reading.
External calibration and local gravity
HW-60KC is externally calibrated. A&D's manual includes zero and span calibration plus gravity-acceleration correction. Because gravity varies slightly by location, recalibration after relocation is good practice—especially if the scale moves a significant geographic distance. Warm the scale, level it, remove all contact from the pan, use a suitable test mass and follow the manual's calibration sequence. For an internal quality system, use calibration weights whose accuracy and traceability are appropriate to the acceptance tolerance. A display increment of 0.01 lb does not itself define the uncertainty of the complete weighing process.
Verification versus calibration
Verification checks whether the scale is performing within the user's tolerance; calibration changes its measurement relationship. A useful daily or shift-start verification uses zero plus one or more known weights that bracket the normal operating range. Repeat after the platform is moved, struck, overloaded or exposed to a major environmental change. If a verification result is outside tolerance, investigate mechanical contact, leveling, batteries and environment before automatically recalibrating. This approach preserves diagnostic information and avoids masking a physical problem with an unnecessary span adjustment.

Unstable reading: check vibration, airflow, a rocking foot, cable tension, nearby machinery and anything touching the pan or load. Slow stabilization: reduce vibration, confirm the platform is level and review comparator/filter settings before suspecting the load cell. Zero will not return: remove all load, check for debris under the pan and confirm the platform is not wedged against a wall or conveyor. Known weight consistently reads high/low: confirm units and test with another weight, then evaluate calibration. Corner-to-corner differences: inspect the platform, pan seating, leveling and mechanical interference. Computer receives bad or no data: verify the installed interface, cable pinout, baud/data settings and output mode separately from weighing performance.
Who should choose HW-60KC?
HW-60KC is strongest for internal manufacturing, QC sampling, batch/formulation work, shipping preparation, checkweighing, receiving, kitting and parts inventory where 150 lb capacity and 0.01 lb process resolution are useful. It is especially attractive when operators need the large platform and comparator but do not need commercial trade approval. Choose HV-60KC when the scale must be legal for trade at 150 lb. Choose HW-100KC or HW-200KC for larger loads; choose a smaller HW model when most loads are light enough to benefit from a smaller platform; and choose a washdown-specific sealed-terminal model if the entire display station will receive direct water exposure.
