Verification Is Different from Calibration

An operator or quality technician can check performance with appropriate reference weights and document the result. If adjustment is required, follow the service and regulatory process that applies to the installed scale.

Step 1: Check the Installation

Make sure all feet support the scale evenly and the level indicator is correct. The bench or stand should not rock. The weighing pan must not touch a wall, conveyor, drain, tote, table lip, or accumulated residue. A cable should have enough slack that it does not pull on the indicator or platform. These mechanical checks solve many apparent calibration problems.

Step 2: Clean and Return to Zero

Remove loose product before washing. Clean using materials and chemicals compatible with the scale and the facility’s sanitation procedure. After cleaning, inspect below the pan and around the frame. Let extreme temperature differences settle. With an empty pan, confirm a stable zero. Repeated zero movement can indicate mechanical contact, drafts, vibration, temperature transition, moisture at a damaged connection, battery problems, or service needs.

Step 3: Use Appropriate Test Weights

Use known reference weights appropriate to the scale’s accuracy class and your company’s quality or regulatory program. Check more than one point when the process uses a broad range of loads. Center the weight and wait for stability. Repeat the same load to evaluate repeatability. If results differ depending on where the load sits on the pan, look for binding, damage, or a corner-load problem and call for service.

What to Do If the Scale Is Consistently Off

First verify the reference weight, weighing unit, tare condition, level, and platform freedom. Power-cycle the scale if allowed by the operating procedure and let it stabilize. Recheck. If a legal-for-trade SE-30KAM still fails the required tolerance, document the failure, remove it from regulated use if your procedure requires that, and contact qualified scale service. Do not alter protected calibration data simply because the error appears predictable.

Unstable or Drifting Readings

Instability is often environmental. Look for vibration from nearby machinery, moving carts, fans, product sloshing in a container, airflow, a flexing table, or workers leaning on the bench. Temperature transitions after washdown or after moving the scale can also affect readings. Mechanical contact is especially important: even light contact with a hose or wall can add or subtract force as the load changes.

If the display becomes weak, the unit resets, or low-battery warnings appear, replace all batteries with a matched set and inspect the compartment. If using external power, verify the correct A&D-approved supply and a reliable outlet. Intermittent power can look like an electronics fault and can interrupt transmitted data even when the weighing mechanism is healthy.

Interface Problems After an Upgrade

For USB or RS-232 problems, separate communication troubleshooting from weighing troubleshooting. Confirm the option, cable, receiving software, output mode, and port settings. Remember that A&D states the standard SE IP68 rating does not remain when SCE-02 or SCE-03 is installed. If a wet-area problem began after an interface installation, inspect the final configured unit and its environmental exposure rather than assuming the original base-model rating still applies.

When Service Is the Correct Answer

Call qualified service when known-weight errors exceed required tolerances, corner-loading is inconsistent, zero cannot be maintained after mechanical causes are removed, the scale has suffered overload or impact, seals are damaged, moisture has entered a non-rated connection, or the legal-for-trade configuration needs adjustment. A documented service visit is preferable to an undocumented field change on a commercial scale.
