A&D SE-60KAL washdown bench scale is a 60 kg / approximately 130 lb platform scale built for environments where routine cleanup, moisture and large containers make an ordinary dry-area bench scale a poor fit. The manufacturer rates the SE series IP68 and specifies a 390 × 530 mm stainless-steel weighing pan for the large-platform SE-60KAL configuration.
What the SE-60KAL is designed to do
This model combines the portability of a battery-powered bench scale with a separate raised indicator and a corrosion-resistant load-cell assembly. A&D lists 1-second stabilization, a 39 mm LCD, counting mode, comparator mode, auto power-off and a battery-life indicator. Six D batteries power the standard scale, which is useful when a washdown station or production line does not have a convenient protected outlet.
Capacity, readability and platform size
A&D specifies 60 kg capacity. The series documentation shows a normal readability of 0.02 kg and a higher-resolution setting of 0.01 kg; pounds and ounces are also available. The MNM listing markets the unit around 130 lb capacity and 0.02 lb readability. Because displayed divisions can depend on configuration and approval settings, verify the delivered unit before writing tolerances into a process specification.
The 390 × 530 mm pan is about 15.4 × 20.9 inches. That footprint is large enough for totes, cartons, ingredient containers, tubs and production bins that are awkward on compact tabletop scales.
What IP68 means in practice
A&D describes the SE series as IP68 and submersible, with protection against dust and water infiltration under the manufacturer's stated test conditions. That makes the basic scale well suited to wet work areas, but IP68 is not permission to ignore cleaning chemistry, cable strain, connector condition or impact damage. Inspect seals and wiring routinely and follow the site sanitation procedure rather than treating the instrument as indestructible.
One especially important option detail: A&D states that installing the SCE-02 Quick USB or SCE-03 RS-232C/comparator-relay option means the system is no longer IP68 compliant. If washdown protection is the reason you chose the SE-60KAL, interface selection has to be part of the sanitation plan.
Counting and comparator functions
Counting mode is useful for repeat parts that have consistent unit mass. Comparator mode can classify a reading as low, acceptable or high relative to programmed limits. In packaging, kitting and receiving, these functions can reduce manual checking, but they do not replace an engineered quality plan when individual parts vary substantially in weight.
Battery life and portable operation
Current A&D product literature advertises roughly 5,000 hours of continuous operation with six D alkaline batteries, while an older A&D brochure and the MNM listing cite about 4,500 hours. Battery chemistry, temperature, age and usage affect actual runtime, so plan battery replacement from real operating experience rather than treating either figure as a guarantee.
Where this scale fits
Good fits include food-processing rooms, wet packaging areas, seafood or produce handling, ingredient weighing, sanitary production cells, chemical-resistant work areas where the approved cleaning agent is compatible with the scale, and receiving stations where a large pan and portable indicator are useful. Keep the load centered, avoid shock loading and do not use the scale as a cart, work table or impact surface.
Calibration and legal-for-trade considerations
The SE series uses external-weight calibration. MNM lists this product as NTEP; A&D also publishes class III metrology documentation for the SC/SE family. For commercial trade, however, the delivered configuration, sealing, local jurisdiction and service status matter. Confirm the nameplate and certificate requirements that apply to your installation before using a high-resolution display setting for a regulated transaction.
SE-60KAL FAQ
Is the SE-60KAL really waterproof?
A&D rates the base SE series IP68. Protection still depends on intact seals, cables and the original configuration; adding certain wired interface options changes the IP68 status.
Can it count parts?
Yes. A&D includes counting mode. The most reliable counts come from uniform parts and a representative sample.
Can it run without AC power?
Yes. The standard design operates from six D batteries, making it useful for portable or washdown locations.
Does the large platform matter?
Yes. The 390 × 530 mm platform is the principal difference between the large-platform SE-60KAL and smaller SE configurations; it better supports bulky containers while keeping the load within the platform footprint.
Can I connect it to a computer?
A&D offers Quick USB, RS-232C/comparator and Bluetooth options. Confirm compatibility and understand the effect of wired options on IP68 compliance before ordering.
How often should it be checked?
Use a schedule based on process risk, usage, washdown frequency and quality requirements. A quick zero, repeatability and known-weight check catches many problems before a formal calibration is due.
