A&D EJ-6100 calibration uses an external reference weight, with 6000 g listed by A&D as the factory calibration-mass setting for this model. The safest workflow is to stabilize the balance first, verify that the pan is empty and mechanically free, perform zero and span calibration using a suitable known mass, then independently check the result. Calibration should correct a demonstrated weighing error; it should not be used to hide drafts, vibration, an unlevel surface, a touching object, or a damaged sensor.

1. Stabilize the Balance
Place the EJ-6100 on a rigid, level surface away from direct airflow, vibration, strong temperature gradients, and objects touching the pan. Let the balance acclimate after moving it. Legacy EJ instructions call for a warm-up period before calibration; allowing about 30 minutes is a sensible starting point for this generation. The reference weight should be at the same room temperature as the balance.
2. Verify Before Adjusting
With the pan empty, confirm stable zero. Place a known test weight and record the result. Repeat it. If the result is stable and within the tolerance required by the process, an unnecessary calibration may add more risk than value. If the result is consistently wrong and mechanical/environmental causes have been eliminated, proceed with calibration.
3. Enter Calibration Mode and Establish Zero
Legacy EJ operating instructions for this generation enter calibration until the display reaches the calibration/zero prompt, commonly shown as “Cal 0.” With nothing on the pan and a stable indication, accept the zero point using the key sequence specified by the delivered manual. Do not press the pan or lean on the table while zero is being captured.
4. Apply the External Calibration Mass
A&D’s legacy EJ specification lists 6000 g as the factory calibration-mass setting for EJ-6100. Place the appropriate known weight in the center of the pan, wait for stability, and accept the span point according to the balance prompt/manual. If a different permitted calibration value is being used, confirm the entered value exactly. A weight labeled 6000 g but not verified to the required accuracy is not a good calibration standard.
5. Remove the Weight and Verify Independently
After the calibration completes, remove the mass and confirm zero. Then test one or more known weights, ideally including a point different from the calibration mass. Repeatability, intermediate-load performance, and zero return provide better evidence than simply seeing an “End” message. Document the result if the balance is part of a quality system.
GLP/GMP/GCP/ISO-Oriented Output
A&D identifies the EJ family as supporting GLP-compliant style output for calibration/documentation workflows. Output capability helps create records, but compliance is a complete procedural system, not a cable feature. The organization still needs controlled reference weights, IDs, dates, signatures or electronic controls, review rules, and retention appropriate to its quality program.
Quick USB
The legacy brochure lists EJ-02 Quick USB. This can simplify getting weight data into a PC workflow. Validate how the receiving application handles decimal places, units, stable/unstable readings, and repeated entries. A spreadsheet that accepts whatever arrives is not automatically a controlled data system.
RS-232C
EJ-03 provides RS-232C for legacy printers, terminals, data loggers, and software that supports serial communication. If the local display is correct but the computer receives no value, check the option, cable, port, serial parameters, output mode, and software before touching calibration. Weighing accuracy and communications are separate troubleshooting paths.
Troubleshooting Calibration Failure
If calibration will not complete, confirm the pan is empty during zero capture, the calibration mass is within the permitted range and correctly entered, the reading is stable, and the surface is not vibrating. A mass that is too heavy or too light for the stored calibration value can produce an error. If the balance cannot repeat the same known weight, investigate environment or service needs before repeatedly attempting calibration.
Troubleshooting Drift or Slow Stability
Look for HVAC airflow, people touching the table, floor vibration, temperature change, static on plastic containers, a sample that is evaporating or cooling, or something touching the pan. Move the setup away from the cause and retest. The EJ-6100 is a 0.1 g compact balance; it does not need an analytical draft shield for every task, but environmental forces can still be large compared with one display division.
