A&D EK-4100i calibration is an external-weight procedure, and accurate calibration starts with a stable, level balance that has warmed up for at least 30 minutes rather than with immediately changing span settings.

Step 1: prepare the balance and environment
A&D instructs users to warm the EK-i series for at least 30 minutes with the pan empty before calibration. Place the balance on a solid surface, level it carefully and avoid drafts, dust, vibration, strong temperature changes, condensation, magnetic equipment, unstable power, direct sunlight and nearby heaters or air-conditioning discharge. If the balance was just moved, give it time to settle thermally before judging its accuracy.
Step 2: verify before recalibrating
Zero the empty balance and apply a known test weight. Remove and replace the weight several times, allowing the stability indication to settle. If the same offset repeats consistently, a span adjustment may be justified. If the value changes significantly from one placement to the next, look for vibration, an unlevel surface, pan interference, unstable temperature or a damaged/dirty weighing system before touching calibration. Calibration corrects a systematic relationship between load and indication; it cannot fix an unstable environment.
Step 3: choose an appropriate calibration weight
A&D’s manual recommends a calibration weight greater than two-thirds of maximum capacity. With an official 4000 g capacity, that means more than about 2667 g. MNM lists 4000 g as the factory calibration-weight setting, so a suitable 4000 g standard is a straightforward full-scale choice. Use a proper calibration or reference mass whose uncertainty is appropriate to your process; do not use a package or household object merely because its label says a nominal weight.
Step 4: enter calibration mode and capture zero
The A&D procedure uses the CAL switch to enter calibration mode. With an empty pan, the balance captures the zero point. Keep hands, tools and containers away from the pan while zero is being measured, and do not lean on the bench. If the balance cannot establish a stable zero, exit the process and solve the instability instead of forcing a calibration through poor conditions.
Step 5: apply the displayed external weight
Confirm or select the calibration-weight value permitted by the manual, then place the matching weight near the center of the pan. Wait for stability and follow the displayed key sequence to capture span. When the balance finishes, remove the mass and return to normal weighing. If you calibrate with a physical weight at the point of use, A&D notes that separate gravity-acceleration correction is not required for that calibration because the local gravity effect is inherently included.
Step 6: verify at more than one point
A successful calibration message is not the end of a quality check. Verify zero return, repeatability and at least one or more known weights appropriate to the actual operating range. For example, if the balance is mostly used between 500 g and 1500 g, include a verification point in that region rather than checking only near 4000 g. Record the results when calibration status affects product quality or traceability.
Troubleshooting zero drift and unstable readings
A moving zero commonly points to airflow, vibration, changing temperature, static or physical contact with the pan. Check that the pan is seated correctly and nothing is trapped underneath it. Make sure containers do not touch the display housing. On a battery-powered unit, charge the optional battery if the power indication is low. For repeated drift after environmental causes are ruled out, schedule service rather than repeatedly recalibrating to chase a moving problem.
Troubleshooting RS-232C output
If the balance weighs correctly but data does not reach the PC or printer, calibration is not the issue. Check the RS-232 cable type, connector seating, communication parameters and output mode. Confirm the receiving device expects the same baud rate, data format and handshake behavior. Test with a simple terminal program if practical before troubleshooting higher-level software.
When to calibrate
A&D recommends calibration before first use, after moving the balance, after a significant environmental change and at regular intervals. The best interval is risk-based: a production balance that determines acceptance of expensive product may need much tighter verification than a classroom balance used for demonstration. Regular known-weight checks provide the evidence needed to set a sensible interval.
