How to Calibrate & Troubleshoot the A&D FX-2000i

A&D FX-2000i calibration is an external-weight process, and the most reliable procedure starts by stabilizing the balance and verifying the error before changing zero or span.

Confirm you have an FX-i model

The FZ-i and FX-i families look similar and share many functions, but the calibration mechanism is different. FZ-i models include an internal mass; FX-i models such as FX-2000i use an external calibration weight. Before beginning, read the model label and use the FX-i procedure from the A&D manual. Do not wait for an internal weight to move on a balance that does not contain one.

Warm up at least 30 minutes

A&D instructs users to power the balance and warm it for at least 30 minutes before calibration. Keep the pan empty during warm-up. Set the unit on a rigid, level surface away from HVAC drafts, vibration, direct sunlight and rapid temperature change. A balance brought from a cold vehicle or warehouse into a warm lab should be given additional time to reach equilibrium before precision calibration.

Perform a known-weight verification first

Zero the balance and test it with a known mass in the normal working range. Repeat the placement several times. If results repeat but are consistently offset, span adjustment may be appropriate. If results scatter, investigate the environment, pan seating, sample stability and bench. A calibration cannot make a vibrating table stable, and repeatedly recalibrating around random error can make overall performance worse.

External calibration sequence

A&D’s manual shows the FX-i external calibration process beginning by holding CAL until the balance enters external calibration mode. The balance first captures zero with nothing on the pan. The operator then selects or confirms the permitted external calibration weight, places that known mass on the center of the pan, waits for stability and stores the span point according to the displayed key prompts. Follow the current manual for the exact key sequence rather than adapting instructions from a different A&D series.

Selecting calibration weights

Use a proper reference mass appropriate to the 2200 g capacity and your quality requirement. A calibration standard should have known accuracy and be clean, stable and handled correctly. Do not use labeled production packages as substitutes; their actual mass can legitimately differ from the printed nominal amount. If your process requires traceability, use weights with suitable calibration certificates and maintain them under controlled handling and storage.

Verify across the actual working range

After calibration, check zero return and repeatability, then verify at representative loads. A balance used for 100–500 g samples should be checked in that region, while one used for 1–2 kg containers should include higher verification points. This is more informative than confirming only the one calibration mass. Document results when the balance influences acceptance, formulation or regulated records.

Troubleshooting drift and unstable readings

At 0.01 g readability, the FX-2000i is less draft-sensitive than a 0.001 g model but still responds to vibration, moving air, temperature and sample motion. Large warm containers can create convection, liquids can slosh, and flexible benches can move when an operator touches them. Check that the pan is clean and seated correctly and that oversized containers do not touch the case. Persistent drift after setup is corrected should be evaluated by service rather than hidden with frequent recalibration.

Troubleshooting RS-232 and interface issues

If the display is stable but data fails to reach a computer or printer, calibration is unrelated. Check cable type, connection, baud rate, data format, command/output mode and the receiving application. If an optional USB or Ethernet board is installed, confirm that the accessory is supported and configured according to the manual. Some optional FX-i boards are mutually exclusive, so verify actual hardware before trying to enable a menu function for an interface that is not installed.

When to calibrate

Calibration is appropriate when the balance is first commissioned, after relocation, after significant environmental changes, after service and at intervals defined by the quality system. Many users benefit from more frequent verification and less frequent adjustment: a quick known-weight check reveals whether calibration is still acceptable without unnecessarily changing the balance every day.

How long should the FX-2000i warm up?

A&D specifies at least 30 minutes before calibration.

Does it use internal calibration?

No. The FX-2000i uses an external weight. Internal calibration belongs to the related FZ-i models.

Should I recalibrate if one reading is wrong?

Not immediately. Repeat the test and check zero, environment, pan clearance and the reference weight first.

Why is the balance unstable with liquid samples?

Liquid motion and temperature gradients can keep the force changing. Let the container settle and reach room conditions before recording a precision result.

Does moving the balance affect calibration?

It can. Re-level and verify after moving, and calibrate with a known external weight when required.

Can calibration make it legal for trade?
