A&D SE-60KAL calibration is an external-weight process, but good calibration starts by proving the mechanical installation is healthy before any adjustment is made. A scale that is touching a wall, carrying debris under the pan or sitting on an unstable frame can be adjusted to look correct at one point while remaining wrong everywhere else.

Before entering calibration mode

Clean the weighing area, verify that the pan moves freely, inspect the cable, confirm the instrument is level, select the intended weighing unit and allow the electronics and load cell to stabilize at the work-area temperature. Use suitable traceable test weights for the accuracy your process requires. Do not use random production objects as calibration standards.

A practical verification sequence

Start unloaded and record zero. Apply a known test load, remove it and check return to zero. Repeat the same load several times to evaluate repeatability. Then check additional points across the working range used by your process. If the scale passes, an adjustment may not be necessary. Calibration should correct a verified systematic error, not be used as the first response to every unstable reading.

External-weight calibration

A&D specifies external calibration for the SE series. Follow the exact procedure for the delivered indicator revision and metrology configuration, especially on sealed or trade-use instruments. After adjustment, repeat zero, span, intermediate-point and repeatability checks. A successful calibration event should be documented with the standards used, their identification, environmental conditions when relevant and the as-found/as-left results.

Unstable readings

If the display will not settle, look for vibration, a rocking support, product touching the indicator column, cable tension, airflow against large containers, water or debris around moving parts, or a load that shifts inside its container. An unstable platform is not fixed by span calibration.

Zero drift after washdown

After cleaning, trapped debris, temperature change and mechanical contact are common causes of a shifted zero. Let the instrument return to a stable temperature, confirm the pan is free, inspect the surrounding frame and check zero again. If the offset persists, perform a known-weight verification before changing calibration.

Battery and low-voltage symptoms

The SE-60KAL uses six D batteries and includes a battery-life indication. If operation becomes intermittent, start with battery condition, contacts and polarity. Replace cells as a matched set according to the manufacturer's guidance rather than mixing old and new batteries.

Interface-related issues

If weighing is correct but data transfer fails, isolate the problem from the measuring system. Confirm the installed interface, cable, receiving-device settings and print/output mode. Remember that A&D's SCE-02 and SCE-03 wired options alter IP68 compliance, so damaged connectors in a wet environment deserve immediate attention.

When to stop and call service

Stop using the scale for critical measurements if it cannot repeat a known load, will not return to zero, shows physical damage, has a compromised cable or seal, or fails verification after correct setup. Trade-use instruments can also have sealing and jurisdictional requirements that make unauthorized adjustment inappropriate.

FAQ

Do I need the full 60 kg capacity as a calibration load?

Not every verification plan requires a full-capacity load, but calibration and compliance procedures can specify particular test points. Use the manufacturer/service procedure and your quality requirements.

Why does it pass at one weight but fail at another?

Possible causes include nonlinearity, mechanical interference, poor test standards, corner-loading effects or an incorrect calibration. Multi-point verification reveals problems a one-point check misses.

Should I recalibrate after every washdown?

Normally you verify first. Recalibrate only when the verification result and your procedure indicate adjustment is necessary.

Can low batteries change behavior?

Low or poor battery connections can cause operational problems. Check the power source before diagnosing deeper electronics faults.

What if the scale is legal for trade?

Follow the applicable sealing, service and weights-and-measures requirements for the delivered configuration. Do not break a required seal simply to experiment with calibration.

What is the fastest daily check?

A clean unloaded zero, one or more known weights, repeatability and return-to-zero checks provide a strong quick screen for many common faults.
