How to Calibrate, Verify & Maintain the A&D EW-12Ki NTEP Balance

A&D EW-12Ki calibration and verification should reflect all three Class III intervals, not just the 12 kg full-scale point. MNM lists 12 kg as the default external calibration mass, while CoC 04-019A3 defines legal operation at 3,000 g × 1 g, 6,000 g × 2 g and 12,000 g × 5 g in multi-interval mode. Routine trade verification should use known weights across the ranges actually used and preserve the approved seal/configuration rather than treating calibration as a daily operator adjustment.

External calibration with 12 kg

For internal use or appropriately authorized service, level the balance on a rigid surface and use a suitable known 12 kg reference. Center the mass, let it stabilize and complete the external calibration sequence. High-capacity reference weights require safe handling and appropriate metrological control. After adjustment, remove the reference and confirm zero before independent verification.

Verify the lower, middle and upper ranges

If the business handles 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg transactions, test representative loads near those regions. The displayed/legal division changes from 1 g to 2 g to 5 g as the range changes. Evaluate each result using the active interval and applicable inspection/service tolerance. A single full-scale check cannot reveal every range-dependent issue.

Corner loading and large containers

A 12 kg gross load on a compact 133 × 170 mm pan can create eccentric loading if the container is wide or placed inconsistently. Compare a known weight at the center and representative positions. Large differences indicate mechanical seating, leveling or contact problems. A package touching the bench bypasses the load cell and cannot be fixed by recalibrating span.

Keep counting and underhook checks separate from trade verification

Counting is excluded from legal trade use by the certificate, so verify trade performance in weight mode. Likewise, although EW-12Ki can physically support an underhook, NTEP under-scale approval under CoC 04-019A3 is limited to EK-6000i and EK-12Ki. If the underhook is used for internal process work, verify that suspended configuration separately and do not mix its results with the certified top-pan trade verification record.

RS-232 and battery troubleshooting

If the displayed weight passes verification but computer data is wrong, inspect serial settings and cable wiring rather than calibration. If instability occurs only on optional battery operation, check the pack/contacts and compare on AC power. Separate power/data issues from metrology so corrective action does not create a new weighing error.
