Four 4,000 lb stainless shear beam load cells are a strong foundation for floor and platform scales that need corrosion resistance plus substantial corner capacity. MNM’s package adds four 1/2-20 feet and spacers, which suits the classic four-corner platform architecture. The cells are described as stainless and moisture sealed, with 3 mV/V output and published 385/350-ohm bridge specifications, so they can be integrated with common industrial junction-box and weighing-indicator systems when the electronics are correctly matched.

Wet Warehouses and Receiving Areas

Floor scales near dock doors, coolers and wash areas see condensation, wet pallets, cleaning water and tracked-in moisture. Stainless load cells reduce corrosion exposure compared with many alloy-steel cells, while the four-corner layout handles pallets, drums, totes and containers across a broad deck. Protect the junction box and indicator to an equal or better environmental level; stainless cells do not help if water enters an unsealed summing box and causes corner drift.

Food and Process Weighing

Ingredient platforms, tote scales and process-floor scales often need frequent cleaning. Stainless moisture-sealed cells are a better material choice for these environments, but sanitary design involves more than the sensor: eliminate product traps, use cleanable deck construction, select suitable cables/conduit and keep the electronics protected. If high-pressure or caustic washdown is routine, confirm the exact environmental sealing and chemical compatibility of every component rather than assuming “moisture sealed” equals the highest washdown class.

Pallet and Forklift-Loaded Floor Scales

Forklift loading is demanding because weight can concentrate on one side while a pallet enters the deck. A four-cell design should be sized for worst-case individual-cell loading, not an ideal 25/25/25/25 distribution. Ramps and pit frames must not touch the live deck, and overload stops or structural guards may be appropriate depending on the design. The cells’ 4,000 lb individual capacity provides useful corner headroom, but the final platform rating must include deck weight, impact and uneven loading.

Drum, Tote and IBC Weighing

A stainless floor platform can weigh drums, mixing vessels on skids, totes and IBCs for filling, batching, inventory and shipping. For filling applications, the indicator may need relay/setpoint or analog/digital output functions beyond simple weight display. The load-cell kit supplies the sensing foundation; choose the junction box, indicator and control hardware around the process. If hoses or pipes remain connected to a vessel, flexible connections are important so they do not bypass weight into the building structure.

Custom Platform Construction Tips

Keep the four support points in one plane. Use a rigid deck so local bending does not overload one sensor. Locate each loading foot directly over the intended shear-beam load point. Prevent horizontal forces from forklifts, hoses or bumpers from binding the cells. Provide cable protection at every corner. Make the junction box accessible for corner trim but protected from water. Design ramps or pit surrounds with clearance from the live deck. Include service access so a cell can be replaced without cutting structural members.

Environmental Limits and Temperature

MNM lists a compensated range of -10 to 50°C and an operating range of -20 to 60°C. The compensated range is the region where the published temperature-compensation behavior applies; the wider operating range describes temperatures in which the cell can operate, not necessarily with identical measurement performance. For outdoor, freezer-entry or hot-process installations, consider how rapidly temperature changes and whether the indicator/junction box share suitable temperature ratings.

Maintenance in Wet Environments

Inspect cable jackets and glands for cuts. Keep debris from packing around feet or under the deck. Check that drain paths stay open. Look for corrosion in the junction box even when the cells look clean. Verify zero after major cleaning or relocation. Perform periodic corner checks to catch a weak cell, water intrusion or mechanical binding early. Avoid directing pressure-wash nozzles into cable entries unless every component is specifically rated for that cleaning method.
