How to Calibrate the MNM MS-5K / MS-520 Floor & Livestock Scale Kit

MS-5K/MS-520 calibration starts with mechanics, because no indicator setting can fix a platform that rocks, a chute touching a fence, a cable under tension or one sensor carrying much more load than the others. The safest public workflow is to prepare and balance the platform, establish unloaded zero, apply a known calibration load using the documented MS-520 procedure for the exact revision, and then verify multiple load positions.

Step 1: Put the scale on a firm, level foundation

Comparable MS-520 livestock systems specifically advise installation on a solid, level surface rather than mud or loose gravel. Check every support point for wobble. A rocking platform changes load distribution every time weight moves across the deck and makes corner errors look like calibration errors.

Step 2: Inspect load-cell and frame freedom

  • No part of the deck/chute should touch the ground, wall, fence or rigid piping during weighing.

  • Cables should have service loops but should not pull on the load cells.

  • Supports should sit firmly and share load instead of leaving one corner unloaded.

  • Remove debris under the platform and confirm livestock gates/chute attachments do not bypass the sensors.

Step 3: Corner/load-sharing check

If the platform uses multiple load cells, place the same known test load near each support point and compare readings. Large differences should be corrected mechanically first. Where the supplied junction system provides trim adjustments, balance the corners using its documented method before final span calibration. Do not use trim pots blindly if the actual kit does not include an adjustable summing junction.

Step 4: Zero and span

  1. Allow the indicator and scale to stabilize with the empty platform/chute in its normal operating state.

  2. Establish unloaded zero using the MS-520 instructions for the exact shipped revision.

  3. Apply a known test load distributed safely on the platform and enter its true value through the documented calibration routine.

  4. Verify additional weights and multiple platform positions; remove the load and confirm return to zero.

Step 5: Verify animal weighing separately

After static calibration passes, test the lock-on/HOLD behavior using safe real-world movement. Animal mode should improve reading stability, but it should not be used to hide a platform that is mechanically unstable or significantly different from corner to corner.

No verified public service-menu sequence

Public MS-520 product references confirm the indicator should be calibrated for accurate weighing, but I did not find a trustworthy exact MS-520 service-menu manual that documents a universal button-by-button span procedure. Because revisions may differ, this guide does not invent menu codes. Use the shipped instructions or obtain the exact procedure from MNM.

Troubleshooting calibration errors

Different readings by corner usually point to load sharing, leveling, binding or trim rather than span alone. Drifting zero can come from a rocking foundation, moisture, cable movement or electrical noise. A consistent percentage error across the range usually indicates span configuration. An animal that produces unstable readings when a known static load is stable is more likely a motion/lock-on setup issue than a basic scale calibration issue.

Can I calibrate on gravel? A rigid, repeatable level support is much better. Loose surfaces can shift under load and change the reading.

Should I use one calibration weight or several? Use the documented span point and then verify multiple loads and positions to catch errors that one point can miss.

Do I need to recalibrate after moving the scale? Verify at minimum. A different foundation or leveling condition can change corner loading and zero.
