25,000 lb Low-Profile Compression Force Testing Applications
A 25,000 lb low-profile compression system can turn a press or fixture into a more measurable process when force matters. The MNM 25,000 lb x 1 lb system pairs a pancake-style compression sensor with an LP7516 portable indicator, making it useful for controlled force checks without building a permanent instrument panel.
Hydraulic press force measurement
Hydraulic pressure is not always a direct substitute for measured force at the workpiece. Seal friction, cylinder geometry, mechanical leverage, alignment and process conditions can affect actual force. A load cell placed in the reaction path can help compare press cycles, verify setups and document force at a specific fixture location. Keep the sensor centered and use platens that do not concentrate load on a small unsupported area.
Bearing and bushing installation
During bearing, bushing, sleeve or press-fit installation, force trends can reveal seating problems, excessive interference, misalignment or an out-of-family component. A 1 lb display increment gives fine visual resolution relative to a 25,000 lb range, but the process should be judged using repeatable fixtures and validated force limits rather than a single peak value taken from an inconsistent setup.
Structural and reaction-fixture testing
The low-profile geometry can fit under a reaction plate, support point or test coupon where stack height is limited. Structural testing requires careful load distribution so the sensor measures axial compression rather than a bending moment. If the test has multiple support points, one sensor measures only the force passing through that location unless the complete structure is instrumented.
Machine setup and process verification
A portable force system can help maintenance and quality teams compare clamp forces, verify stops, check forming or assembly loads, establish machine setup baselines, and investigate process changes. RS-232 capability on the LP7516 can support compatible data collection if a process record is needed.
How to fixture a low-profile load cell
Use rigid, flat support and loading surfaces.
Center the force and avoid side load or platen edge contact.
Use an engineered load-distribution plate if the workpiece contact area would otherwise create a local stress concentration.
Guard the test area against ejected parts, fixture failure and sudden release of stored energy.
Keep the cable protected from the press stroke and moving tooling.
Peak Hold versus process force
Peak Hold can answer “what was the maximum force?” but not “what happened throughout the cycle?” If a process depends on the shape of the force curve, connect the indicator or suitable electronics to a data system that can capture force versus time or position. For simple go/no-go and setup checks, a stable peak may be sufficient.
Calibration and verification

FAQ
Can I place the sensor anywhere under a press platen?
No. Off-center placement can create eccentric loading and measurement error. The fixture should direct force through the sensor's intended compression axis.
Can it replace a hydraulic pressure gauge?
It measures force at the sensor location, which can complement or validate pressure-based estimates. It is not a hydraulic system safety instrument unless engineered and validated for that role.
Is it suitable for destructive testing?
It may be used in an appropriately engineered force-test system within its capacity, but destructive tests need guarding, rated fixtures and a plan for sudden energy release and fragments.
