Four MNM GX-1-5K 5,000 lb shear beams can support hopper, tank and batching scale projects when the vessel sits on a structure that transfers weight predictably through the sensors. Process weighing adds challenges that floor platforms often avoid: pipes, hoses, agitators, thermal growth and rigid connections can all create force paths that bypass the load cells.
Dead load, live load and process margin
Start by accounting for the empty vessel, frame, motors, piping carried by the scale structure and maximum material load. Then consider uneven fill, dynamic impact, mixer forces and safety margin. The cells need enough capacity for worst-case support reactions, not just average total weight divided by four.
Piping can become a hidden load path
Rigid process piping can add or subtract apparent weight as the vessel fills, moves or changes temperature. Flexible connections, properly supported external piping and thoughtful routing reduce these effects. If a tank reads differently after a hose is connected, investigate the mechanical connection before changing calibration.
Four-cell vessel setup
Build rigid support points that align with the exact load-cell mounting requirements.
Install cells consistently and route all cables to a protected junction box.
With the vessel empty and process connections in their normal state, establish zero and compare support/corner response.
Trim the four channels so a known localized load produces comparable response around the vessel when practical.
Perform span calibration using a suitable reference method, then verify at multiple process-relevant points.
Batching and ingredient weighing
For batching, repeatability often matters as much as absolute displayed weight. Consistent fill rate, valve behavior, material in flight, vibration and mixer operation can affect the cutoff point. The 3 mV/V cell family and 350-ohm output specification help with indicator/junction-box matching, but process tuning still determines whether the batching system hits its target repeatedly.
Troubleshooting vessel scales
Zero changes with temperature: inspect piping restraint, vessel expansion and cable/connector condition.
Reading changes when pump or mixer runs: separate actual process force/vibration from electrical noise and mechanical bypass paths.
One support is consistently different: inspect that cell, foot, mounting surface and junction-box channel before global span changes.
Batch cutoff drifts while static calibration is good: investigate material flow and controls rather than repeatedly recalibrating the scale.
