The MNM MS-1-5K 5,000 lb load cell for OEM test stands, cable tension and industrial force measurement is useful when a machine builder or fabrication shop wants the sensor itself rather than a preassembled scale package. Its S-beam geometry allows force to pass directly through the transducer in tension or compression, while the published 3 mV/V bridge signal can be read by a compatible weighing indicator, transmitter, PLC interface or data-acquisition system with appropriate strain-gauge conditioning.

OEM Test Stand Integration

A custom test stand normally consists of a rigid frame, actuator or loading mechanism, specimen grips/adapters, the MS-1-5K and an instrument that converts the bridge signal into engineering units. The S-beam should be the intended force path, not a secondary member that picks up unpredictable bending. Use self-aligning hardware where appropriate, protect the cable from motion and design guarding for any test that stores significant energy.

Cable, Chain and Wire-Rope Tension Fixtures

The MS-1-5K can be placed inline with a cable, chain, wire-rope assembly or tension member in a purpose-built fixture. This is different from a clamp-on tensiometer: the tensile force actually passes through the S-beam. Typical measurements can include preload, steady tension, maximum pull, force at a defined extension and comparisons between assemblies. Grips and attachment hardware must be rated for the full test force and arranged so the sensor is not bent sideways.

Actuator, Clamp and Machine-Force Measurement

In an actuator fixture, the load cell can measure thrust or pull force between the actuator and a rigid reaction structure. Manufacturing teams can also use it to characterize clamp force, extraction force, assembly force or machine reaction force when the mechanics fit the 5,000 lb range. For dynamic or cyclic tests, choose electronics with the sampling rate and data interface needed for the event; a simple scale indicator may be adequate for static or Peak Hold work but not for high-speed waveform analysis.

Connecting to an Indicator, Transmitter or PLC

The MS-1-5K is a passive strain-gauge bridge. MNM publishes 10 V DC/AC excitation, 385 ± 15 ohm input resistance, 350 ± 5 ohm output resistance and 3.00 ± 0.01 mV/V rated output. A weighing indicator can directly condition this signal when compatible. A PLC usually needs a dedicated load-cell input module or signal conditioner that converts the bridge output into a supported voltage, current, fieldbus or digital value. Preserve the load-cell cable and shielding practice appropriate to the electronics, especially around motors and variable-frequency drives.

Calibration for an OEM System

Electrical scaling based only on the nominal 3 mV/V value can get a system close, but a real mechanical calibration with a known force captures the actual sensor output, mounting conditions and electronics together. For process or quality-control equipment, calibrate the completed assembly and verify more than one point. Recheck after replacing the sensor, changing important fixtures or repairing wiring.
