A 15,000 lb x 2 lb S-type force system fills an important gap between medium-duty 10,000 lb instruments and larger 20,000 lb setups. The MS720-15K can be useful when a technician wants to quantify pulling force, compare rigging setups, document a controlled proof load or capture a peak without relying on a coarse dial gauge. MNM lists Peak Hold, rechargeable power, RS-232 and a calibrated 15,000 lb x 2 lb configuration, which makes it practical for field and shop test work when used inside a properly engineered fixture.
Winch and recovery pull-force measurement
For a winch test, the load cell belongs in a straight, controlled load path with rated connectors and a secure anchor. The goal is to measure force, not create a live recovery hazard. Keep people out of the line of pull, avoid shock loading and use barriers or remote observation where appropriate. The 2 lb increment allows operators to compare line pull under different conditions, but the reading is only meaningful if the test geometry is repeatable. Changes in pulley arrangement, line angle, drum layer, friction and anchor compliance can change the measured force even when the winch itself has not changed.
Hoist and suspended-load testing
For controlled hoist testing, use rated fixtures designed for the expected load and dynamic conditions. The MS720-15K’s S-beam format is suitable for axial tension measurement when installed correctly, but the entire lifting arrangement must be evaluated independently. Peak Hold can help capture the highest force during a slow controlled lift or test cycle. Avoid interpreting a single peak as a certification result unless the test procedure, reference traceability and equipment ratings satisfy the applicable standard or internal quality plan.
Cable, chain and rigging comparison tests
The system is useful for comparative tests where the same load path is used to evaluate cable pretension, chain tension, turnbuckle adjustment or fixture behavior. Establish a baseline, zero the system with the fixture unloaded, apply force gradually and record the reading. RS-232 can be useful when a compatible data-collection workflow is available. For repeatable comparisons, document connector locations, line angles, sample condition, ambient conditions and loading rate—not just the displayed peak.
Proof-load work: measurement versus certification
Many buyers search for a 15,000 lb proof-load scale, but there is an important distinction between measuring a force and certifying a component. The MS720-15K can be part of a controlled proof-load test setup, but the required test method, safety factor, traceability, calibration interval and documentation depend on the component and governing standard. If a proof-load certificate or legal compliance is required, use an appropriate procedure and calibrated reference chain rather than assuming that a factory-calibrated display alone satisfies the requirement.
Getting repeatable data
Repeatability improves when the load is centered, the fixture does not bend, cable routing does not tug on the load cell and the loading rate is consistent. Verify zero before each series. Run at least one low-force check before high loads. If two repeated tests differ more than expected, inspect the mechanical setup before recalibrating. A small angular change at 15,000 lb can create a substantial side-force error or unwanted stress.

Buyer questions
Can it capture a maximum pull? MNM advertises Peak Hold. Can it be used outdoors? The listing does not claim a weatherproof enclosure, so protect the electronics from the environment. Can it be left permanently in a lifting system? That is an engineering decision beyond the product listing; use it only in configurations for which the complete assembly is properly rated. Is 2 lb resolution enough? For many heavy pull comparisons yes, but choose a finer-resolution system if small force changes are critical. Does it log data automatically? The listing states RS-232 output, but the receiving software, cable and communication format must be matched to the indicator.
