Why Measure Press Force Directly?

Hydraulic pressure is useful, but pressure by itself does not account for every loss, geometry change or friction source between the pump and the workpiece. A compression load cell placed in the force path measures the delivered reaction force. That can help compare presses, validate a repair, establish a repeatable setup for bearing installation, study forming force, confirm a fixture reaches the expected load or create a more quantitative shop procedure.

Load Placement Between Press Platens

Position the disk on a rigid support directly under the press ram or load-spreading plate. The top contact should distribute force across the intended loading surface rather than press on an edge or small point. If the ram is narrow, use an appropriately engineered loading button or plate that stays centered. Verify alignment at low force before increasing load; a ram that visibly walks sideways or a platen that tilts under load will compromise both measurement and safety.

Peak Hold for Maximum Pressing Force

Some press operations have a clear maximum just before a part seats, a bearing moves, a joint releases or a formed component reaches its final position. Peak Hold on the OP-901 can retain that maximum. This is useful when a shop wants a simple pass/fail window—such as verifying that a bearing installation required a force within a known process range—without requiring an operator to watch the display continuously.

Examples include bearing and bushing installation, press-fit assembly, fixture clamping, small forming operations, component seating, controlled straightening, material compression trials, comparing hydraulic cylinders, checking a repaired press, and determining the load at which a mechanical assembly begins to move. Force data is particularly valuable when a successful operation has a known process window and operators need to identify unusually low or high force.

The OP-901A/B family offers Peak, manual and automatic Hold modes, tare/zero functions and RS232C. A rechargeable battery keeps the display portable around the shop. RS232 can support a compatible printer or computer workflow when a shop wants to record press-force results. The manual specifies a 10-sample-per-second A/D rate, which is suitable for many slow press operations but should be considered when evaluating very rapid impacts or highly dynamic events.

Can it replace a hydraulic pressure gauge?
