MNM Scales 2,500 lb Shear Beam Calibration Guide

Calibrating a scale that uses the MNM Scales 2,500 lb shear beam is a system-level job: first make sure the mechanics are correct, then equalize multiple load-cell outputs where required, establish zero and span at the indicator, and finally verify the scale at several positions and loads. Replacing a load cell without completing those checks can leave a scale that looks correct in the center but changes depending on where the load is placed.

Start With the Mechanical System

Before electronic calibration, inspect the mounting bolts, foot, spacer, deck stops, checking system and cable routing. The platform should not touch a wall, ramp, conduit, debris or any other object that can bypass load around the cells. On a four-cell platform, all support feet should contact the floor and share dead load. A rocking deck or a foot that is not carrying weight will create corner errors that span calibration cannot fix.

Step 1: Confirm Wiring and Cell Response

For the MNM cell, Red is +Excitation, Black is -Excitation, Green is +Signal and White is -Signal. Verify each cell is landed consistently in the junction box. If one cell responds opposite to the others, confirm signal polarity before changing trim pots or indicator settings.

Step 2: Corner Test Before Final Span

Place the same known test load near each supported corner or load point and record the displayed value. Use a load large enough to make corner differences obvious but safely within the scale capacity. If one corner differs significantly, first re-check leveling and mechanical freedom. Only after the platform is mechanically sound should you use the junction-box trim controls to equalize outputs.

Step 3: Trim the Junction Box

A summing junction box combines multiple load-cell signals and commonly provides trim potentiometers so one corner can be reduced relative to the others. Follow the actual junction-box documentation because trim direction and pot arrangement vary by model. Make small adjustments, repeat the same corner load, and work iteratively until all corners are acceptably close. Do not use large trim changes to hide a binding or damaged platform.

Step 4: Establish Zero

With the complete platform assembled and unloaded, let the system stabilize and establish zero according to the exact indicator manual. The dead weight of the deck is part of the normal no-load condition and should remain on the cells during scale calibration.

Step 5: Perform Span Calibration

Place a known test load on the scale and enter that value in the indicator’s calibration sequence. A reference that exercises a meaningful portion of the scale’s working range is usually more useful than a very small weight. For commercial Legal-for-Trade service, use the test standards, tolerances, procedures and sealing requirements that apply to the jurisdiction and device class rather than treating a general shop check as official certification.

Step 6: Verify Center, Corners and Multiple Loads

After span calibration, repeat the corner test, check the center, and verify multiple known loads across the range you actually use. Load and unload the platform to test return to zero. A scale that is correct at one weight but wrong elsewhere may have configuration, mechanical, reference-load or load-cell problems that deserve investigation before another calibration attempt.

When Should You Recheck Calibration?

  • After replacing a load cell, junction box or indicator.

  • After relocating or re-leveling a floor/platform scale.

  • After an overload, impact or water-intrusion event.

  • When different corners produce noticeably different readings.

  • When zero drifts or known check weights no longer agree.
