Optima OP-312-10K 10,000 lb NTEP S-Type Load Cell Guide
The Optima OP-312-10K is a 10,000 lb alloy-steel S-type tension and compression load cell sold by MNM Scales for hanging, crane-scale, test-stand and industrial force-measurement systems. MNM lists it as an in-stock, add-to-cart product and publishes a detailed electrical specification set for replacement and OEM integration.
Published OP-312-10K specifications
MNM publishes a nominal rated output of 3.00 mV/V, nonlinearity and hysteresis of ±0.02% full scale, repeatability of ±0.01% full scale, 30-minute creep of ±0.02% full scale, and zero balance of ±1% full scale. Input resistance is listed as 385 ±15 ohms and output resistance as 350 ±5 ohms. Recommended excitation is 10 V AC or DC, insulation resistance is at least 5,000 megohms, and safe overload is 120% full scale.
The published compensated temperature range is -10°C to 50°C and the operating range is -20°C to 60°C. The listing specifies a 20 ft cable and four-wire color code: red excitation positive, black excitation negative, green signal positive and white signal negative.
Why these specifications matter
A 3 mV/V sensor produces about 30 mV at full load when excited with 10 V, so the connected indicator or amplifier must accept a low-level millivolt bridge signal. Resistance, signal polarity and excitation compatibility should be checked before replacing another S-beam. Capacity alone is not enough: body dimensions, thread size, cable exit, mechanical alignment and environmental exposure must also match.
Installation and setup
Install the OP-312-10K so force passes through the centerline of the S-beam. Avoid side load, bending, twisting and shock. Use correctly rated rod ends, eye bolts or adapters, lock the hardware against rotation, protect the cable from pulling and abrasion, and leave enough capacity margin for dynamic peaks. After wiring, verify unloaded output stability before applying a known load.
Applications
Typical uses include crane and hanging scale rebuilds, cable and chain tension fixtures, winch pull testing, actuator and hydraulic-cylinder force measurement, suspended hopper weighing, material test stands and OEM tension/compression machines. A load cell measures force; it is not itself lifting hardware, and every shackle, eye bolt, frame and fixture must be independently rated.
Troubleshooting
A reversed reading usually means the signal pair is reversed or the force direction differs from the indicator configuration. Drift can result from warm-up, moisture, cable damage, mechanical binding or unstable excitation. Poor repeatability often points to side load, loose adapters or a fixture that does not return to the same position. An overload or off-scale reading can come from an open conductor, wrong connector pinout, excessive preload or damaged bridge circuitry.
Frequently asked questions
Is the OP-312-10K calibrated by itself? No. The indicator, amplifier or data-acquisition system stores the zero and span calibration. Is it suitable for tension and compression? S-type geometry is commonly used for both, provided the fixture and calibration support the chosen direction. Does NTEP automatically make an installed scale legal for trade? No. The complete configuration, indicator, installation, sealing and local weights-and-measures requirements still matter. Should it be recalibrated after replacement? Yes—verify wiring, zero, span, repeatability and return to zero.
Where to buy
Buy the OP-312-10K from MNM Scales and confirm the current stock, exact thread geometry, certificate requirements and indicator compatibility before installation.
