How to Calibrate an IDS-672-10K 10,000 lb Pancake Load Cell

IDS-672-10K calibration means calibrating the entire measurement channel: load cell, fixture, cable, amplifier/indicator and display or software. The sensor supplies an analog bridge signal; the connected electronics convert that signal to pounds, kilograms or force units.

1. Verify mechanical setup first

Clean the loading surfaces and confirm the sensor sits flat and centered. Check that bolts, adapters, loading buttons or threaded interfaces match the exact sensor. A tilted platen, edge contact or bent fixture can produce a stable-looking number that is still wrong.

2. Verify the electronics

Before power-up, use the exact IDS-672-10K documentation to confirm excitation, signal leads, shielding and bridge resistance. The public MNM listing does not publish those electrical values, so they should not be guessed from another capacity or brand.

3. Establish zero

Install the final fixture, allow the system to stabilize, remove applied process force, and establish zero with normal dead-load components in place. If zero drifts continuously, troubleshoot the mechanics/electronics before moving on to span calibration.

4. Apply a known span force

Apply a traceable known load through the same load path used in service. Use the indicator, amplifier or software manufacturer’s documented span procedure to assign the true value. At 10,000 lb capacity, use a safely engineered reference-force method; do not improvise an unsafe press or suspended-weight setup.

5. Verify multiple points and unloading

  • Check several increasing-load points.

  • Check one or more decreasing-load points to reveal fixture hysteresis/binding.

  • Return to zero and repeat the cycle to assess repeatability.

  • Record environmental conditions and reference standard if the calibration needs traceability.

Troubleshooting

No response can indicate missing excitation, open cable, wrong connector pinout or sensor damage. Reverse response usually indicates signal polarity/direction. A nonlinear or load-position-sensitive response can result from poor contact or bending. Drift can come from temperature, cable movement, electrical noise or mechanical creep. Repeated overload or impact can permanently change zero/output and should trigger inspection and recalibration.

FAQ

Can I calibrate it before mounting? Bench characterization can be useful, but final calibration should verify the sensor in its real fixture because mounting affects the force path.

Do I need a 10,000 lb calibration force? The required span load depends on the instrumentation and accuracy goal. Use the largest safe, appropriate traceable force practical and verify performance over the working range.

Should I recalibrate if I change the indicator? Yes. The new electronics create a new measurement chain.
