MNM Scales 4,000 lb NTEP Shear Beam Load Cell for Floor, Platform, Hopper & Tank Scales

The MNM Scales 4,000 lb NTEP shear beam load cell for floor, platform, hopper and tank scales is built around the sensor geometry used in many low-profile industrial weighing systems. A single-ended beam bolts rigidly to the frame at one end while the loading foot carries weight at the other, allowing multiple cells to support a deck or vessel and feed their millivolt signals into a junction box and digital indicator.

Four-Cell Floor and Platform Scales

A common floor-scale design places one shear beam near each corner of the deck. The four cells connect to a junction box, where their signals can be trimmed so a test weight reads consistently at every corner. The junction box then feeds a single indicator. The total usable platform capacity depends on more than adding four cell capacities: deck dead weight, shock loading, uneven distribution, approved scale design and overload margin all influence the final rating.

Why the Foot and Spacer Improve Platform Loading

The loading foot lets the scale sit on the floor while directing vertical load into the correct end of the shear beam. Adjustable feet also help level the deck and compensate for small floor irregularities. All feet should contact the floor firmly; a rocking platform can transfer weight from one cell to another and create repeatability and corner errors. The spacer helps establish the intended mechanical clearance between the cell, frame and loading hardware.

Hopper and Tank Weighing

Single-ended beams are also widely used in weigh modules under hopper and tank legs. Instead of suspension tension, the vessel applies compression through the module into the beam’s loading point. A three- or four-point support system measures total vessel weight, while a controller can calculate product inventory or batch additions. Flexible piping, hoses and conduits should be arranged so they do not carry significant vertical force that bypasses the load cells.

Batching, Filling and Process Control

With the right indicator/controller, a shear-beam vessel system can monitor ingredient addition, stop a feeder at target weight, track inventory or create production records. The load cells provide the weight signal; relays, analog outputs, fieldbus communications and PLC logic come from the chosen instrumentation. Stable mechanical design is essential because vibration and product flow can cause live readings to fluctuate even when the sensors are working correctly.

Stainless Steel for Industrial Environments

MNM describes this model as stainless steel and moisture sealed. That is valuable in applications exposed to humidity, damp floors or regular cleaning. Protect the rest of the system to the same standard: junction boxes, cable entries and connectors need suitable environmental protection, and cables should be routed away from forklift traffic, sharp frame edges and standing water.

Corner Calibration and Troubleshooting

If a floor scale reads correctly in the center but differently at the corners, inspect mechanical contact first: feet, frame debris, bent structure and overload stops can all cause errors. Then test each cell’s signal and use the junction box trim controls if appropriate. Finish with full span calibration. If one corner is dead or highly unstable, isolate the corresponding load cell and cable rather than adjusting the junction box far enough to hide a failed sensor.

NTEP and Legal-for-Trade Applications

MNM lists the sensor as NTEP and Legal for Trade. That makes it appropriate as a component in commercial platform and process scales whose approved design supports it. The finished scale still needs the correct indicator, capacity/division configuration, calibration and local weights-and-measures approval before weight is used to determine price or charge.

FAQ

Can this be used in a four-cell floor scale?

Yes. Single-ended shear beams are a common four-corner floor/platform-scale architecture.

Can it be used under a tank or hopper?

Yes, when installed in a suitable weigh-module or engineered support arrangement.

Does each 4,000 lb cell make a four-cell scale 16,000 lb capacity?

Not automatically. Platform dead load, uneven distribution, mechanical design, safety factors and certification determine the finished scale capacity.
