A single-ended shear beam is rigidly mounted at one end while force is introduced near the opposite end through a loading foot or mount. The internal strain-gauge section measures shear deformation while the load cell supports the platform mechanically. The Foot and Spacer Matter

The supplied foot and spacer form part of the mechanical load introduction. On a platform scale, the foot contacts the floor while the load-cell body is bolted to the scale frame. This allows the platform to move microscopically under load without forcing the sensor into an incorrect bending condition. Keep the foot free to seat properly, ensure all feet contact the floor, and level the scale before corner calibration. A seized, bent or mismatched foot can produce corner errors even when the electrical load cell is healthy.

NTEP and Commercial Scale Repair

For a scale used to sell goods or charge by weight, NTEP status is important. The load cell is an approved component, but a commercial scale also depends on the indicator, platform design, division size, calibration and local inspection requirements. After replacing a cell in a Legal-for-Trade floor or platform scale, the technician should perform corner tests, span calibration and any sealing or inspection steps required before returning the scale to commercial service.
