A&D EK-4100i counting combines ACAI parts-counting capability with percentage weighing, a comparator, standard RS-232C, underhook support and optional rechargeable power, giving one compact 4000 g × 0.1 g balance several useful production and laboratory workflows.

How ACAI counting works
The balance accepts 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100-piece samples. Once it calculates an initial average unit weight, ACAI can refine that average when additional pieces are added. This helps reduce the effect of small manufacturing variation and improves the basis for a larger count. For better results, use a larger sample when parts are light or vary noticeably. The published minimum unit weight is 0.1 g, but parts at the lower limit deserve extra verification because any real variation becomes significant relative to the display division.
Percentage weighing
Percentage mode stores a reference sample as 100% and expresses later weights relative to it. MNM publishes a 10 g minimum reference for 100% and a 0.1% minimum percentage display. This can support coating pickup, fill comparison, moisture-loss demonstrations, recipe adjustments and incoming-material comparison. Choose a stable reference that is representative of the process; a noisy or undersized reference transfers its uncertainty into every percentage result.
Comparator and buzzer
Comparator limits let the balance classify a measured load relative to preset criteria, and the documented buzzer can make the result easier for an operator to recognize without staring at the numerical display. Typical uses include package fill checks, good/bad assembly screening and portion control. The optional comparator relay can send an output to external equipment. Use any relay output within a properly engineered control system; it should not be treated as a standalone safety function.
Standard RS-232C
Unlike balances that require an optional board just to communicate, the EK-4100i includes RS-232C as standard. This supports printers, computers and data loggers with compatible settings. For a simple operator workflow, configure output so a stable result is sent with the PRINT key. For automated collection, select the mode appropriate to the software and confirm the receiving device’s serial parameters. Label data with sample, lot or operator information outside the balance so the weight remains meaningful later.
GLP, GMP, GCP and ISO-oriented reporting
A&D supports output intended for GLP/GMP/GCP/ISO-oriented documentation. Depending on the configured device, records can include calibration or weighing information that helps maintain traceability. This does not automatically make a process compliant with a specific quality standard; compliance also depends on procedures, training, reference standards, record retention and change control. The balance is a tool within the system, not the entire system.
Underhook weighing
A&D supports underhook weighing on the EK-4100i. This can be useful for determining density, weighing irregular objects or using a suspended holder below the bench. Keep the suspended system free from contact, drafts and vibration. Include the hook and fixture mass when checking available capacity. If the object can swing, allow it to stop before recording the value because movement translates directly into changing force at the sensor.
Optional rechargeable battery
The EKW-09i rechargeable battery enables operation away from mains power, with A&D documenting around nine continuous hours under its stated conditions. This is useful for carts, receiving, classrooms and short-term field-style inspection. Charge the pack before critical work and verify the balance after moving it to a new location. The battery solves the power-cord problem; it does not solve vibration, temperature or leveling problems.
Auto power off and daily operation
Auto power-off helps reduce battery use when the balance is idle. In production, decide whether that behavior fits the workflow; an operator may prefer the balance to remain powered during a shift so it stays thermally stable. On AC power, leaving a precision balance powered during the work period can reduce repeated warm-up cycles. Always follow facility policy and A&D operating guidance.
FAQ
What sample sizes can I use for counting?
The EK-4100i supports 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100-piece counting samples.
What is the minimum published unit weight?
MNM lists 0.1 g. Actual counting confidence improves when unit weight is comfortably above the lower limit and parts are uniform.
Is RS-232C optional?
No. A&D lists standard RS-232C on the EK-i series.
Can it send comparator signals to external equipment?
Yes, with the optional comparator relay output, subject to the interface specifications and proper system design.
How long does the optional battery run?
A&D documents roughly nine hours of continuous operation under the manual’s stated conditions.
Can I use the underhook for tensile force testing?
It is intended for suspended weighing and related measurement applications, not as a substitute for a dedicated force-test system. Avoid side load, dynamic pull tests and overload.
