Match readability to the piece

Start with the smallest item you weigh and the tolerance your work requires. Readability is the displayed increment, so a 0.01 g display alone does not establish accuracy or a suitable minimum sample weight. Include the tray or container when checking capacity; pressing tare does not create additional capacity. For gemstones, confirm the carat unit and its displayed increment on the exact model rather than relying on the word jewelry in a product title.

Compare compact and higher-capacity balances

The A&D EJ-610 Newton balance provides 610 g capacity with 0.01 g readability and a 110 mm round pan. It uses external calibration and can operate from an AC adapter or four AA batteries. This is a useful compact option to compare for internal weighing and inventory work; the listed EJ-610 is not NTEP. Batteries and optional data interfaces should be checked separately.

For heavier batches at the same displayed increment, the Sartorius GL2202i-2S jewelry balance offers 2,200 g capacity, 0.01 g readability, a 180 mm round pan and internal adjustment. The larger pan gives more room for a tray. Sartorius lists this exact -2S model without legal verification, so its internal adjustment should not be treated as trade approval. Compare other precision balances when your required capacity or displayed increment falls outside these choices.

Check the exact unit before buying or selling by weight

The A&D EK-1200i Everest balance has 1,200 g capacity, 0.1 g readability and a 133 by 170 mm pan. A&D's published certificate lists it as Class II, but also requires units manufactured after February 25, 2020 with the combined 0/T key to carry a “Not for Direct Sales” marking. Its counting feature is not legal for trade. Check the actual unit's identification, key arrangement and permitted application before choosing it for a buying counter.

Use the legal-for-trade scales category to compare approved configurations, then confirm local installation and inspection requirements. A certificate alone does not make a scale ready for commercial use.
