The A&D HL-300WP cleaning and setup routine is simple, but the details determine whether this 300 g × 0.1 g scale keeps the wet-area and small-portion advantages buyers expect. The key points are to operate within the current IP65 rating, keep the optional AC adapter out of the protected wet configuration, use six matched AA batteries when moisture protection matters, keep the pan mechanically free, and verify performance after cleaning or relocation. HL-300WP is not NTEP legal for trade; current CoC 05-008A1 applies to HL-3000WPN and HL-3000LWPN, not this 300 g model.

Initial setup and leveling
Place the scale on a rigid, level counter away from vibrating appliances, flexible cutting boards and strong airflow. Use the built-in spirit level and adjustable feet. Fit the pan correctly and confirm that it touches only its intended support. A light cup, tray or filter holder that touches a backsplash, cable or surrounding countertop can create a false low reading because part of the load bypasses the weighing mechanism. After setup, power on, confirm zero and verify with a known weight before critical use.
Six-AA battery operation and runtime
HL-300WP uses six AA cells. A&D lists approximately 200 hours with alkaline batteries under stated conditions. Replace all six as a set; mixing old and new batteries can produce uneven discharge and leakage risk. If the display becomes dim, slow or unstable, check battery condition before assuming the load cell has failed. Remove batteries for long-term storage. Battery operation is also the preferred wet-area setup because it avoids the AC connection that removes the IP65-protected configuration.
Current IP65 rating: what it does and does not mean
A&D's current HL-WP product information specifies IP65: dust-tight construction and protection against water jets under the standard test. It does not mean immersion proof, dishwasher safe or unlimited high-pressure washdown. Some older marketing literature uses stronger language such as NEMA-4X, but the current manufacturer IP65 specification is the safer reference for present-day operating procedures. Treat the scale as cleanable wet-area equipment, not as an object to soak.
The optional AC adapter removes IP65 compliance
A&D explicitly states that HL-WP does not conform to IP65 when the optional AC adapter is used. In a wet prep area, disconnect and protect external power before cleaning and use batteries when the rated enclosure protection is required. Keep the adapter, jack and cord dry. Do not route an energized adapter connection into a washdown zone and continue to treat the complete setup as IP65.
Tare correctly without confusing net and gross capacity
Place the empty container on the pan, wait for stability and use RE-ZERO/TARE. The displayed result returns to zero, but the physical container mass still counts toward the 300 g capacity. A 180 g bowl leaves only about 120 g of gross capacity for product even though the display says zero after tare. Use light standardized containers when possible, and move to a higher-capacity model when the vessel itself consumes too much range.
External calibration and gravity compensation
HL-WP supports external calibration, and A&D's manual includes gravity-acceleration compensation because local gravity changes slightly by geographic location. For most users, the practical method is to let the scale acclimate and level at its operating location, calibrate with an appropriate known mass, then verify with another known value. If the scale moves a long geographic distance or routine verification fails, recalibration may be appropriate. Calibration changes the scale; verification checks it without changing settings.
Cleaning procedure for food and wet-area use
Remove loose food and powder promptly. Disconnect external power. Clean the pan and exterior using methods compatible with stainless steel, seals, plastics and labels. Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive chemicals that can damage surfaces or seals. Do not immerse the scale. Make sure no residue remains beneath or around the pan support, then dry and reassemble before weighing. After unusually aggressive cleaning, run zero and known-weight verification before returning the scale to critical work.
Troubleshooting zero drift and unstable readings
If zero drifts, remove all load and inspect for debris under the pan, side contact, an unstable counter, weak batteries, air movement and temperature change. If a known test weight is consistently high or low, confirm the unit and weight, then perform verification and external calibration if justified. If results vary depending on pan position, inspect pan seating and mechanical interference. Repeatedly pressing zero or recalibrating should not be used to hide a physical problem.
Exact trade-status reminder
Cleaning, calibration and good verification do not change legal-for-trade status. HL-300WP is not listed on NTEP CoC 05-008A1. The Class III models on that certificate are HL-3000WPN and HL-3000LWPN, both 3000 g × 1 g. Use HL-300WP for internal process weighing and select the appropriate certified model when weight determines a commercial transaction.
