The A&D SK-5000WP foodservice washdown scale fits operations that need more capacity than a small portion scale but still want a compact stainless platform, long battery life and legal-for-trade capability. Current NTEP CoC 98-086A3 lists SK-5000WP as Class III at 5000 g × 2 g, 11 lb × 0.005 lb and 176 oz × 0.1 oz. Combined with A&D's NSF food-equipment positioning and IP65 construction, that makes it useful for seafood, meat, produce, deli, bakery, farmers-market, wet-packing and commercial kitchen applications where 11 lb capacity is enough.

Seafood counters and wet fish processing

Seafood work combines moisture, frequent cleaning, stainless-surface expectations and often sale by weight. SK-5000WP addresses those needs with the current Class III NTEP listing, NSF food-equipment suitability and an IP65 scale body. Use trays or containers that fit the roughly 232 × 192 mm pan, tare them correctly and keep product/drainage from mechanically touching the surrounding counter. For customer transactions, maintain the required seal/markings and follow the local weights-and-measures inspection or placement-in-service process.

Meat, deli and prepared-food portions

The 11 lb capacity handles many meat cuts, deli portions, prepared foods, cheese and packaged products while 0.005 lb readability gives useful trade resolution. Tare paper, trays or bowls before adding product. For repeated portioning that does not directly determine price, the same scale can serve as a process-control tool. Define whether the workstation is a commercial transaction point or an internal prep station because legal-for-trade sealing/service requirements are most important at the former.

Produce, farmers markets and specialty retail

For small produce quantities, herbs, specialty foods and farmers-market goods sold by weight, SK-5000WP's certified pound/ounce modes can match U.S. customer-facing workflows. The current certificate includes 176 oz × 0.1 oz in addition to pounds and grams. Use the unit permitted/appropriate for the transaction and keep the scale level on a rigid table. Battery operation reduces cord hazards and helps preserve the intended wet-area protection where external power would be inconvenient.

Bakery and commercial kitchen ingredient weighing

A bakery can use SK-5000WP for dough portions, fillings, prepared ingredients and multi-pound containers that exceed the range of a 300 g scale. The 2 g metric division is appropriate for many food batches but not for tiny additives requiring tenths or hundredths of a gram. Use a separate precision balance for micro-ingredients rather than expecting one washdown bench scale to cover every formulation step.

Wet packing and production checkweighing

In wet packing, operators can use target ranges to verify portions or package weights before sealing. The SK-WP family is simple rather than interface-heavy, so it is strongest where the operator reads the display directly instead of feeding every result to a network. Establish an acceptable range based on product requirements and perform known-weight verification at a suitable interval. If automated records, relays or advanced checkweighing outputs are required, consider a more data-oriented production scale.

Current Class III NTEP status and certified units

Current CoC 98-086A3 lists SK-5000WP as Class III with nmax 2500. Certified configurations shown are 5000 g × 2 g, 11 lb × 0.005 lb and 176 oz × 0.1 oz. MNM's page still cites CoC 98-086A2. The A3 revision superseded A2, added ounce mode for SK-5000WP and clarified the sealing mechanism. The model remains certified; the update is the current certificate revision and the additional certified unit.

NSF, IP65 and NTEP each matter for a different reason

NTEP addresses legal metrology and trade weighing. NSF relates to sanitary food-equipment design. IP65 describes protection against dust and water jets. SK-5000WP brings all three attributes into one compact product, but none substitutes for the others. A scale can be NTEP but unsuitable for a harsh sanitation environment, or NSF-oriented but not legal for trade. Select based on all requirements of the workstation.

Battery operation for wet and mobile stations

SK-5000WP uses six D cells. A&D/MNM literature lists approximately 600 hours with manganese batteries and about 1,200 hours with alkaline batteries under stated conditions. That makes cordless operation practical for farmers markets, prep tables and washdown areas. The AC transformer is not waterproof, so battery use is especially attractive where the IP65 protected configuration is important. Replace the batteries as a set and keep the battery compartment clean and dry.

Verification before a shift or sales period

Check that the scale is level, empty and at zero. Apply a known test weight representative of normal use and confirm it against the business's acceptance/service procedure. A commercial user should not open protected calibration access simply because a check weight looks wrong; first verify the setup, test weight and zero condition, then use qualified service as required. Keep any legally required seal intact.

Cleaning food residue without defeating the weighing system

Remove the stainless pan when appropriate, clean food residue promptly and prevent debris from packing around the pan supports. Disconnect/protect external power and stay within IP65 limits rather than immersing the scale. Use compatible cleaners, dry the station and confirm the pan is mechanically free before weighing again. After major cleanup or a move, verify zero and a known weight before customer transactions.

When SK-5000WP is not the right scale

Choose a larger certified bench/platform scale when product plus container can exceed 11 lb. Choose HL-300WP or another finer scale for small internal portions needing 0.1 g readability. Choose a true 0.01 g/0.001 g precision balance for formulation requiring much finer increments. Choose a networked/checkweighing scale when every result must be automatically logged. SK-5000WP is strongest when compact foodservice durability, trade certification and moderate capacity are the priorities.

Frequently asked questions

Is SK-5000WP NTEP? Yes, Class III on current CoC 98-086A3. What are the certified units? 5000 g × 2 g, 11 lb × 0.005 lb and 176 oz × 0.1 oz. Why does MNM show A2? A3 superseded A2 and added ounce mode/clarified sealing. Is it NSF compliant? A&D identifies the SK-WP family as NSF compliant. Is it IP65? Yes in the intended protected configuration; the external transformer is not waterproof. How long do alkaline batteries last? About 1,200 hours under stated conditions. Is it good for seafood and meat? Yes when the load fits the 11 lb capacity. Can it be used for sales by weight? Yes in the certified configuration, subject to local placement-in-service and sealing requirements.
