How to Calibrate the MNM IDS-672-5K with OP-901A / OP-901B

For calibration help or the correct replacement component, call MNM Scales at (832) 290-3120 or email mnmscales@yahoo.com.

Calibrating the MNM IDS-672-5K 5,000 lb compression scale is more than entering a span number: the low-profile load cell must first be mounted on a rigid, centered load path, then the OP-901 indicator can be configured and adjusted with a known reference force.

Before Entering the OP-901 Calibration Menu

Inspect the sensor, cable and contact surfaces. Make sure the cell is fully supported, the press or fixture contacts the intended center area and no side load is being introduced. Assemble the normal test adapters before setting zero so their dead load is handled consistently. Allow the indicator and mechanical system to stabilize.

OP-901 C01 Through C04: Configure the Scale Before Zero and Span

Optima's OP-901 manual documents a C01-C06 calibration menu. C01 selects the calibration unit, C02 sets decimal places, C03 selects the graduation/division and C04 stores maximum capacity. For an IDS-672-5K, the final values must represent the actual delivered system configuration. Do not exceed the load-cell rating, and do not copy settings from a different capacity simply because the indicator looks the same.

C05: Zero Calibration

C05 is the OP-901 zero-calibration channel. With the system in its intended unloaded condition, select the zero-calibration command as documented by Optima and let the countdown finish without touching the fixture. If the display cannot hold a stable zero, leave the menu and solve the mechanical or electrical instability first; repeatedly capturing an unstable zero only stores a moving target.

C06: Span with a Known Reference

C06 performs known-weight/known-force span calibration. Apply an appropriate reference smoothly and enter its true value according to the OP-901 procedure. For a 5,000 lb industrial system, choose a reference and range that support the uncertainty needed for the job. A tiny force near the bottom of the range may not establish confidence in measurements near several thousand pounds.

Verify After Calibration

Unload and record return to zero. Apply several known points through the working range, unload again and repeat at least one point. If the process uses Peak Hold, verify Peak Hold separately. Record as-left error rather than assuming a successful menu sequence guarantees good results. Calibration quality is demonstrated by verification data.

If the Reading Is Wrong After a Successful Span

Check for a wrong C01 unit, decimal/division mismatch in C02/C03, incorrect capacity in C04, off-center loading, fixture flex, hydraulic pressure drift or an unsuitable reference. If error changes significantly with load, inspect the mechanics before performing another one-point span. If the cell or indicator was replaced, confirm wiring and the delivered sensor capacity first.

A Note on the MNM Listing's 5K/10K Text

The product title, SKU and certificate language say 5,000 lb, while one line says “10k.” Before entering C04 or performing high-force calibration, read the actual sensor nameplate and supplied certificate. Use the delivered hardware as the authoritative capacity reference rather than assuming that conflicting web line is correct.

FAQ

What does C05 do? It calibrates zero. What does C06 do? It performs span calibration with a known reference. Do I calibrate before installing the load cell? Calibrate the complete installed measurement system whenever practical because mounting affects the result. Can I use any test weight? Use a reference appropriate to the force range and accuracy requirement. Why does the value drift under constant hydraulic pressure? Pressure variation, fixture creep, temperature and mechanical settling can all contribute. Should I enter 5,000 or 10,000 lb capacity? Confirm the actual delivered sensor nameplate/certificate because the web listing contains conflicting text.
