How to Calibrate & Troubleshoot the A&D EK-3000i

A&D EK-3000i calibration is an external-weight procedure centered on a factory 3000 g calibration mass. A&D’s manual recommends leveling the balance, letting it reach thermal equilibrium and powering it for at least half an hour before weighing or calibration. The same manual lists 0.1 g repeatability and ±0.2 g linearity for EK-3000i. A reliable maintenance program therefore begins with environment and verification—not repeated CAL cycles every time the last digit moves.

Warm-up, leveling and environmental control

Use the leveling feet and bubble, place the balance on a rigid surface and keep it away from drafts, vibration, direct sun, heaters, air-conditioning outlets and magnetic sources. Let a balance moved from storage or delivery reach room conditions. A&D specifically recommends at least a half-hour of powered warm-up and recalibration after relocation. Do not calibrate while the balance or calibration mass is still changing temperature.

External calibration with 3000 g

The factory calibration value is 3000 g. Use an appropriate known mass, center it on the pan and avoid touching or sliding it while the balance captures the value. Keep the pan empty during zero calibration and wait for stability before proceeding. If your quality system uses a different user-definable calibration mass permitted by the instrument, document that setting and use a reference with suitable uncertainty. A random shop object or another unverified scale is not an adequate calibration reference for controlled work.

Verify after calibration

After CAL finishes, verify zero and at least one independent known mass. For processes using a broad range, check low, middle and high working points. Repeat a key load several times to evaluate repeatability. If the same mass produces a spread much larger than 0.1 g under controlled conditions, investigate drafts, vibration, contact or temperature before changing span again. Calibration adjusts one relationship; verification confirms whether the complete weighing system meets the process requirement.

Linearity and multi-point checks

A&D specifies ±0.2 g linearity. If a balance is correct near 3000 g but noticeably wrong around 300 or 1500 g, repeating the same full-span calibration may not solve the underlying issue. Verify several known values, confirm the reference weights and arrange service if a consistent load-dependent error remains. Multi-point checks are especially useful when the same EK-3000i is used for both small QC samples and near-capacity batches.

Eccentric loading and pan contact

A wide container can touch the surrounding bench or housing, bypassing part of the load. Compare the same known mass at the center and representative off-center positions if operators routinely place parts inconsistently. Large position-dependent differences suggest mechanical interference, pan/support damage or leveling problems. Do not attempt to “calibrate out” an eccentric-loading fault because a center-span adjustment cannot correct a mechanical position effect.

Troubleshooting zero drift and unstable readings

If zero wanders, confirm the balance is level and unloaded, inspect the pan/support for debris, reduce airflow and vibration, allow more warm-up and check whether the room temperature is changing. If a plastic container or powder produces static, use suitable static-control methods. If the reading changes when a hand approaches a charged container, that is an electrostatic/environment issue rather than a span-calibration error.

RS-232C problem versus weighing problem

If the local display is correct but a PC receives no data or garbled characters, check serial settings, cable pinout and output mode separately. A communication fault does not justify recalibrating the balance. Conversely, if both the display and transmitted result fail a known-weight check, investigate the weighing system first. Separating data-path faults from metrology faults prevents unnecessary adjustment and downtime.

Calibration does not change NTEP status

EK-3000i remains a non-NTEP process balance regardless of how carefully it is calibrated. A&D’s 2025 U.S. catalog explicitly identifies the EK-i models that are NTEP under CoC 04-019A1 and does not mark EK-3000i as trade legal. If the weighing result is used to determine a regulated commercial transaction, select an appropriate certified model rather than relying on calibration quality alone.
