How to Calibrate, Verify & Maintain the A&D EW-1500i NTEP Balance

A&D EW-1500i calibration, verification and maintenance must account for the fact that it is a Class III multi-interval scale. MNM lists 1,500 g as the default external calibration mass, while CoC 04-019A3 defines the legal intervals as 0.1 g to 300 g, 0.2 g to 600 g and 0.5 g to 1,500 g. A single full-scale check is not enough to characterize a station that operates across all three ranges; verification should include representative points in the ranges actually used.
External calibration with 1500 g
For an internal or appropriately serviceable unit, use a suitable known 1,500 g mass and the A&D external calibration procedure. Level the balance, allow temperature stabilization and center the reference on the pan. For a scale already placed into commercial service, the Category 1 physical seal protects calibration access; qualified service and local requirements govern protected adjustment and resealing.
Verify each working range
Use known weights in the lower, middle and upper regions if all three are operationally important. Evaluate each result against the active division and applicable service tolerance. A difference that represents one division in the 0.1 g range is not equivalent to one division in the 0.5 g range. Document the actual load and range when recording verification data.
Zero, repeatability and corner loading
Confirm zero, repeat the same known load several times and compare representative positions on the 133 × 170 mm pan. Large position effects indicate pan seating, leveling or mechanical contact. Repeatability expectations differ by range—MNM lists 0.1/0.2/0.5 g—and should be interpreted with the active interval rather than a single universal tolerance.
Do not use counting mode as legal verification
CoC 04-019A3 excludes counting from legal-for-trade use. A known piece count can be useful for checking the internal inventory function, but it is not a substitute for legal known-weight verification. Keep metrology verification in weight mode using suitable certified/reference masses and the approved configuration.
RS-232 and power troubleshooting
If the local display passes known-weight checks but a PC or printer receives incorrect data, diagnose serial settings and cabling separately. If instability appears only on optional battery power, inspect battery condition and contacts. A communication or power fault should not be “fixed” by changing calibration unless the local weighing result also fails verification.
