How to Calibrate a GX-1-5K Floor Scale Load Cell: Corner Trim, Zero & Span

Calibrating a GX-1-5K floor scale load cell correctly requires more than putting a test weight in the center and changing the span number. In a multi-cell floor or platform scale, the mechanical setup and corner balance must be correct first. Otherwise the center can appear accurate while the same load reads differently in each corner.

1. Inspect the Mechanical Installation

Confirm the replacement cell is mounted in the same orientation as the other corners, the mounting surface is flat and rigid, the loading foot is straight, and the platform does not touch ramps, walls, pit frames or debris. All feet should contact the floor. A rocking deck or a foot that is bottomed against the load cell can create errors that no electronic adjustment will fix.

2. Verify Wiring Before Calibration

Confirm excitation and signal conductors are on the correct junction-box terminals. The related GX family uses red +excitation, black -excitation, green +signal and white -signal. If the installed cell uses a different label or cable revision, follow the actual cell documentation rather than color alone. A reversed signal pair typically produces a negative-going response; incorrect excitation or a loose conductor can cause unstable or dead readings.

3. Zero the Indicator

Warm the indicator as recommended by its manufacturer, remove all product and movable items from the platform, confirm the deck is free, and establish zero. If zero drifts noticeably with no load, troubleshoot mechanical binding, moisture, cabling or a damaged cell before continuing.

4. Perform a Four-Corner Test

Use one known test weight and place it in the same relative position over each load-cell corner. Record all four readings. Rice Lake’s Summit 3000 manual—a comparable four-shear-beam platform reference—recommends a test load around 25% of capacity for its platforms and explains the standard process: identify the lowest-output corner as the reference and trim the higher-output corners down to match it. The exact acceptable tolerance for your finished scale depends on its design, indicator configuration and legal-for-trade requirements.

5. Trim the Junction Box

If the junction box has individual trim potentiometers, adjust only the higher-reading corners toward the lowest reference corner. Rezero after adjustments and repeat the four-corner test because the adjustments interact. Do not use span calibration to hide a large corner error; span changes the overall system response, while corner trim balances the cells against one another.

6. Set Span with a Known Load

Once the corners agree, place a traceable known load in the normal weighing area and perform the indicator’s span calibration according to its manual. Use the largest practical certified load for better confidence across the working range. A calibration performed with a very small fraction of capacity can magnify uncertainty when the scale is later used near full load.

7. Verify Multiple Points and Return to Zero

After span calibration, check at least several points across the intended operating range, then unload completely and confirm the scale returns to zero. Repeat a mid-range load several times to evaluate repeatability. Also repeat the corner test. A good calibration should not depend on where the load is placed.

Troubleshooting Common Calibration Problems

Different corner readings usually point to mechanical setup, load-cell mismatch or junction-box trim—not the overall span value. A reading that changes when cable is moved suggests wiring or moisture intrusion. Slow zero return can indicate binding, overload damage or a mechanical foot issue. If one corner produces very little signal, isolate that cell and compare resistance/output with the other cells before repeatedly recalibrating the indicator.
