The MNM 500 lb x 0.1 lb S-type system can serve as the measurement element in a compact bench test stand for controlled pull, push, breakaway and component-force testing. A good bench fixture turns the load cell from a portable measuring device into a repeatable test instrument by fixing the alignment, attachment points and loading direction. This is valuable for small manufacturing operations, repair shops, product development and quality checks where operators need to compare forces from part to part.

Build a straight load path

Mount the load cell so the test force acts through its intended axis. Use rod ends, eye bolts, clevises or custom adapters that do not impose bending moments. In compression, use aligned contact surfaces; in tension, keep the pull line centered. The stand frame must be much stiffer than the test specimen if you want the force reading to represent the part rather than flex in the fixture. Add guards when a specimen, hook or cable could break and release stored energy.

Manual versus powered loading

A handwheel, lever or screw mechanism can provide slow controlled force for static tests. A powered actuator can automate cycles, but loading rate becomes an additional variable and can create overshoot. If the objective is breakaway or peak force, Peak Hold may be useful. If the objective is force at a fixed displacement, pair the load measurement with a reliable position reference. Never rely on the indicator alone as an overload stop for a powered actuator; design mechanical/electrical limits into the test stand.

Useful test types

Examples include connector insertion/extraction, latch release, pull-off force, small cable termination checks, clamp force, spring force at a defined travel, actuator push/pull comparison, friction/breakaway tests, packaging closure force, component seating and destructive tests that remain within the fixture and sensor limits. For destructive testing, shielding is especially important because the part can fail suddenly while the S-beam captures the peak force.

Repeatability checklist

Use the same adapters and attachment points; zero before each series; apply force at a consistent rate; allow temperature/stabilization time when high precision matters; avoid cable movement; define whether results are live, peak or averaged; record the test direction; and run repeated trials. If repeated readings scatter more than expected, inspect the fixture before changing calibration. Loose joints, friction and misalignment are often larger error sources than the digital indicator.

RS-232 and data capture

MNM lists RS-232 on the indicator, which may help a test stand send readings to a PC, printer or controller. Serial integration requires the correct cable pinout, baud/settings and data format for the exact indicator, so identify the model before buying interface hardware or writing software. For automated test logging, validate that the output mode sends the value you need—live, stable, print-command or another format—rather than assuming all indicators stream continuously.

Calibration before production use

After the load cell is installed in the bench fixture, verify zero and span with known forces through the same load path. Fixture adapters can introduce preload and alignment effects that were not present during factory calibration. If acceptance limits matter, create a documented verification schedule and recheck after overload, repair or fixture changes.
