MS720-1K Hoist, Winch, Cable & Pull-Force Testing

Winch line-pull testing

Place the load cell in line between the winch line and a rated reaction point or controlled test fixture. Increase force smoothly rather than shock loading. Winch pull can change with drum layer, voltage, hydraulic pressure and mechanical condition, so define the exact setup if you want meaningful comparisons over time.

Cable, rope and chain tension

For static cable or chain tension, keep the S-type sensor aligned with the line of pull and prevent the cable from rubbing or creating a side component. The load cell measures force; it does not make the test hardware safe. Every shackle, eye bolt, adapter, frame, anchor, cable and hook needs an appropriate rating and inspection condition. Keep people out of the line of pull, guard against component release and avoid testing where a failure could launch stored-energy hardware toward personnel.

Getting repeatable results

  • Use the same attachment points and line geometry for every test.

  • Control pulling speed and avoid impact or slack take-up shock.

  • Zero the system in the same fixture/preload condition.

  • Verify calibration with a known force before critical tests.

  • Repeat tests to understand normal variation instead of relying on one peak.

FAQ

Can I test a 1,000 lb-rated winch at exactly 1,000 lb?

A 1,000 lb load-cell capacity alone does not determine a safe test level. Consider expected overshoot, the load cell's measurement range, all rigging ratings, the test standard and the need for safety margin.

Is this a crane scale?

MNM markets it as a crane/tension-compression force system, but the complete safe application depends on the supplied and user-provided rigging. Confirm intended use with MNM when lifting applications are involved.

Can RS-232 log the pull force?

The listing states RS-232 output. Actual logging requires the correct cable, protocol and software for the indicator supplied with your unit.
