The MNM Scales 10,000 lb x 0.1 lb S-type load cell system is a high-capacity tension/compression package for users who want much finer displayed increments than a typical 10,000 lb industrial scale. MNM lists the system as calibrated and ready to use with Peak Hold, a 0.7-inch LCD indicator, lb/oz/kg units, AC/DC power, three AA batteries, a stainless mounting bracket and an S-type load cell based on the MS-1-10K family.

What Does 10,000 lb x 0.1 lb Mean?

The first number is the stated capacity; the second is the displayed increment. A 0.1 lb increment gives the operator visibility into much smaller changes than a 1 lb or 2 lb display. That can be useful for comparative testing, slow pull-force studies, spring or actuator characterization and repeated component checks. However, 0.1 lb display resolution should not be interpreted as guaranteed ±0.1 lb total measurement accuracy across 10,000 lb.

MS-1-10K Sensor Family Specifications

MNM publishes the bare MS-1-10K S-beam at approximately 3.00 ± 0.01 mV/V output, ±0.02% FS nonlinearity, ±0.02% FS hysteresis and ±0.01% FS repeatability. Input resistance is 385 ± 15 ohms, output resistance is 350 ± 5 ohms, excitation is 10 V DC/AC, safe overload is 120% FS and the published cable length is 20 ft. The four-wire code is red +input, black -input, green +output and white -output.

Peak Hold and Fine Resolution Together

Peak Hold is useful for capturing a short maximum, while fine displayed resolution is useful for seeing smaller changes during a stable test. Those are different benefits. For breakaway-force work you may care primarily about the peak; for comparison testing you may care more about repeatable stabilized values. Define the measurement goal before choosing the test method.

Applications

Potential applications include controlled cable and rope tension tests, winch pull comparisons, actuator thrust measurements, fixture validation, heavy spring testing, fabrication QC and machinery-force studies. In every case the sensor needs an axial load path and fixtures rated for the intended force.

Setup and Verification

Mount the S-beam straight, avoid side loading, power the indicator and allow it to stabilize, establish zero under the normal fixture condition and then verify with known loads. When chasing small displayed changes on a 10,000 lb system, mechanical repeatability becomes especially important: tiny fixture shifts, cable movement or temperature drift can be larger than the displayed increment.

FAQ

Does 0.1 lb readability mean ±0.1 lb accuracy?

No. Readability is the displayed increment. Overall uncertainty includes sensor, indicator, calibration, fixtures and environmental effects.

Can it measure compression?

An S-type load cell can measure tension and compression when the fixture is designed to load the sensor axially in the intended direction.
