A&D EK-6100i 6000 g × 0.1 g compact precision balance is a high-capacity tenth-gram EK-i model for jewelry production, manufacturing, parts, batching, laboratory and quality-control work. The model number can mislead buyers: EK-6100i has a true 6,000 g maximum capacity, not 6,100 g. Its U.S. legal status is also clear. A&D’s current U.S. product matrix lists EK-6100i without the NTEP designation, and MNM’s separate EK-6100J page explicitly describes EK-6100i as non-NTEP while the J model is the legal-for-trade alternative. EK-6100i instead emphasizes 0.1 g process resolution, active standard RS-232C, ACAI counting, percent, comparator and underhook capability.

Exact specifications: 6000 g, not 6100 g
MNM and A&D both specify 6,000 g capacity and 0.1 g readability, with 0.1 g repeatability, ±0.2 g linearity and approximately two-second stabilization on A&D’s current U.S. page. The stainless weighing pan is 133 × 170 mm, and the compact body is around 190 × 218 × 53 mm. MNM lists a 6,000 g default calibration mass, 10 display refreshes per second and operation from the AC adapter or optional rechargeable battery.
Definitive NTEP answer: EK-6100i is non-NTEP
Do not let a dealer URL or generic EK-i family phrase override the exact model status. A&D’s current U.S. series page marks the legal-for-trade EK-i models separately; EK-6100i appears as 6000 g × 0.1 g without NTEP. MNM’s EK-6100J listing makes the distinction even more explicit: EK-6100i is non-NTEP, while EK-6100J is the legal-for-trade version. For internal QC, manufacturing, batching or inventory, EK-6100i’s finer 0.1 g process readability is valuable. For a regulated customer transaction, use an exact certified model/configuration.
RS-232C is a major EK-6100i advantage
Standard bidirectional RS-232C can send weighing/count data to a computer, printer or logger and accept supported commands. This is a practical distinction from MNM’s EK-6100J description, which says the legal-for-trade J variant does not have a functional RS-232 serial interface. If electronic records or printer integration are central to the workflow and legal-for-trade status is not required, EK-6100i can be the more useful production model.
Underhook support for suspended or density weighing
A&D’s current accessory mapping includes EK-6100i among the models compatible with the EKW-07i underhook. Below-balance weighing can support density, specific-gravity or awkward-load methods when the hanging fixture is mechanically isolated. The fixture and sample must not rub on the bench, housing or floor, and the completed setup should be verified in the actual suspended configuration.
Counting and percent functions
MNM lists a maximum count around 60,000 pieces, 0.1 g minimum unit weight and sample sizes of 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100. ACAI refines average unit weight as additional pieces are added. Percent mode uses a 10 g minimum 100% reference and 0.1% divisions. Those functions support large parts lots, formulation and comparative QC while preserving the 6 kg gross capacity.
External calibration and verification
The balance uses external calibration, with 6,000 g listed as the default mass. Level the unit, let it stabilize in the operating environment, calibrate using a suitable known reference and verify with an independent load after adjustment. For a station used from a few hundred grams through several kilograms, multi-point verification is more informative than checking only full scale.
Battery, relay and portability
Current A&D U.S. family information advertises roughly 250 hours with the optional rechargeable battery. EKW-04i comparator relay and EKW-09i rechargeable battery are mutually exclusive internal options, so select either built-in relay automation or cordless mobility. RS-232C remains standard, and the balance’s low-profile metal housing, backlit LCD and sealed key panel support demanding workbench use.
Best applications for EK-6100i
Strong applications include jewelry manufacturing, gold/silver process weighing, larger formulation batches, parts counting, materials testing, production sampling, packaging QC and density/specific-gravity work where 6 kg capacity and 0.1 g readability are appropriate. Choose EK-6000i if NTEP Class III legal-for-trade status matters more than 0.1 g process resolution, or EK-6100J when its particular trade configuration fits and the disabled serial interface is acceptable.
Frequently asked questions
Does EK-6100i weigh 6,100 g? No; current A&D/MNM specifications give 6,000 g capacity. What is readability? 0.1 g. Is EK-6100i NTEP legal for trade? No. Does it have RS-232C? Yes, standard and functional. Does it support underhook weighing? Yes. What is the default calibration mass? 6,000 g. How many pieces can it count? About 60,000 when capacity allows. What is the minimum counting unit weight? 0.1 g. Which related model is legal for trade? EK-6000i is NTEP Class III at 1 g readability; MNM also offers the distinct EK-6100J trade model.
