The A&D FX-5000i laboratory and production balance is a 5200 g × 0.01 g external-calibration model for workflows that need five-kilogram-class capacity without dropping to 0.1 g resolution. It is useful for larger formulation vessels, QC samples, components, packaging checks and R&D. The exact regulatory answer is simple: FX-5000i is not an NTEP legal-for-trade model in A&D’s current U.S. lineup, and no FX-5000iN appears in the current NTEP model matrix. Use it for internal measurement and process decisions, not for customer transactions determined directly by weight.
Laboratory and R&D work
The 5200 g range gives laboratories room for heavier beakers, fixtures and samples than the 3000-series models while maintaining 0.01 g displayed increments. A&D specifies 0.01 g repeatability and ±0.02 g linearity. Those specifications support routine precision work, but method acceptance should still account for calibration-weight uncertainty, environment, container effects and the required measurement uncertainty. A larger vessel can create more draft and convection effects than a small calibration weight, so validate the real setup rather than relying only on a brochure number.
Formulation and batching
Tare the empty vessel, then add each component against a written target. Percent mode can express additions relative to a reference mass; MNM lists a minimum 100% reference of 1 g. For multi-component batches, record actual additions as they are made and define what to do if a component is overshot. Removing mixed material after several ingredients are combined usually does not restore the intended composition. The 5.2 kg capacity makes FX-5000i useful for larger development batches that would overload a 3.2 kg balance.
Quality control and repeated measurements
A&D’s Statistical Calculation Function can summarize repeated results for production samples, components or packaged goods. Use the local statistics for quick decisions, but retain individual measurements when traceability or root-cause analysis matters. Averages can hide outliers. Comparator limits can provide a fast HI/OK/LO judgment, while standard RS-232C can send the accepted result to a PC, printer or data logger.
Parts and component weighing
ACAI counting is useful for reasonably uniform parts. MNM lists a 0.01 g minimum unit mass and sample sizes of 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100. For heavier assemblies, use the scale as a gross/net QC station instead of counting. Verify a known quantity before scaling a counting setup to a large inventory total; average-piece-weight variation can dominate count error even when the balance itself meets specification.
Production and packaging checks
Approximately one-second stabilization in FAST mode can support rapid sampling, but real factory performance depends on bench vibration, nearby machinery and operator handling. A large box or tray can overhang the 150 mm pan only if it remains stable and touches nothing else. If a container contacts a guard, cable or surrounding bench, part of the load bypasses the sensor and the displayed value can be falsely low. Build the fixture around the balance rather than forcing the load to fit awkwardly.
Data capture with RS-232C, USB or Ethernet
RS-232C is standard. Quick USB and Ethernet are internal options for different workstation architectures. Test the full path with known weights, confirm unit and decimal position in the stored record, and define whether the system accepts stable-only values or continuous data. The internal rechargeable battery is another option, but A&D states that Quick USB, Ethernet and the internal battery cannot be installed simultaneously, so connectivity and mobility should be planned before ordering.
Verification for production use
At startup, check level and zero, then apply a known mass representative of the normal working range. Recheck after relocation, overload, impact or a major temperature change. For broad-range use, verify at more than one point. If results vary by pan position, investigate eccentric loading and mechanical interference rather than repeatedly recalibrating. If the local display passes but transmitted data fails, troubleshoot the interface separately.
When to choose a different model
Choose FZ-5000i if internal calibration is operationally important. Choose a smaller 0.001 g model when finer resolution matters more than capacity. Choose a certified NTEP model if the weight directly determines a commercial transaction. Choose a larger platform scale when the gross load exceeds 5200 g or cannot sit safely on the 150 mm pan. The best model is the one whose capacity, readability, environment and regulatory status all match the actual task.
