How to Calibrate & Verify the A&D FX-5000i

A&D FX-5000i calibration is external, not internal. The balance uses known calibration masses supplied by the user or laboratory rather than the motorized internal mass found in FZ-5000i. MNM lists accepted calibration values of 5000, 4000, 3000, 2000, 1000 and 500 g. A&D’s FX/FZ-i manual recommends at least about 30 minutes of powered warm-up, proper leveling and a stable environment before precision weighing. A good program follows calibration with independent verification instead of assuming a completed CAL routine proves performance across the full 5200 g range.

Prepare the balance before calibration

Place FX-5000i on a rigid, level surface away from HVAC airflow, direct sunlight, vibration and rapid temperature change. Fit the 150 mm pan correctly and make sure nothing touches it. Power the balance for at least about 30 minutes and allow a newly moved balance or calibration weight to reach room conditions. Static on plastic containers and dry powders can create forces much larger than one 0.01 g division, so control static and drafts before adjusting span.

Choose the calibration mass deliberately

Accepted masses listed by MNM are 5000, 4000, 3000, 2000, 1000 and 500 g. For a controlled procedure, use a known reference whose tolerance/uncertainty is appropriate for the process. A mass near the upper part of the range gives strong span information, but a laboratory may choose a value specified by its SOP. Do not use an unverified container, gym weight or another ordinary scale as the calibration reference when traceability matters.

External CAL sequence and handling

With the pan empty and stable, enter external calibration according to the FX-i procedure, establish the zero point, then place the requested mass carefully in the center. Do not slide the mass across the pan or touch the bench while the balance captures the value. Wait for the stable indication and follow the prompts through completion. If CAL fails, identify the cause—wrong mass, instability, static, temperature or mechanical contact—rather than repeatedly forcing the procedure under changing conditions.

Verification after calibration

After calibration, remove the mass and confirm zero, then test an independent known weight. For broad-range applications, verify low, middle and high points. A&D specifies 0.01 g repeatability and ±0.02 g linearity, so repeated results and multi-point error should be evaluated against the process tolerance plus reference/environment uncertainty. Keeping pre- and post-adjustment verification data can reveal gradual drift versus a sudden mechanical problem.

Repeatability test

Use the same known weight, center it, wait for stability, record the result, remove it fully and let the balance return to zero. Repeat several times. If the spread is larger than expected, investigate airflow, vibration, static, warm-up and pan contact before changing calibration again. Repeatability is a measure of the entire weighing setup in that moment; span calibration cannot cure a continually changing environment.

Linearity and multi-point error

A balance can be accurate at a 5000 g calibration point yet show an unacceptable deviation at a much lower working load. That is why multi-point verification matters. Use suitable known values across the operating range and compare error patterns. A consistent load-dependent error after proper calibration can indicate a service issue rather than a reason to keep repeating the same span adjustment.

Eccentric loading and large containers

Because FX-5000i is often used with larger vessels, check that the container does not touch the surrounding bench or housing. Compare a known weight at the center and representative off-center positions if operators load inconsistently. Large position-dependent differences point to pan/support interference, leveling or mechanical damage. Calibration at the center cannot correct an eccentric-load fault.

Static, airflow and convection

Plastic vessels, powders and dry rooms can create electrostatic force. Warm/cold samples create convection, and wide containers respond to airflow. If the reading changes when a hand approaches a plastic container or when HVAC turns on, improve environmental control rather than recalibrating. A&D offers response/filter settings, and appropriate breeze/static-control accessories may be more important than another span adjustment.

When to recalibrate versus verify

Verification is appropriate at startup, before critical batches, after relocation, after impact/overload, and after major environmental change. Recalibrate when verification shows a consistent span error under controlled conditions or at the facility’s scheduled interval. Avoid using calibration as the first response to every last-digit fluctuation because doing so can hide installation trends and erase useful before-adjustment evidence.

Calibration cannot make FX-5000i legal for trade

FX-5000i is not an NTEP model in A&D’s current U.S. catalog. There is no current FX-5000iN listing. A perfectly calibrated FX-5000i is still a process/laboratory balance, not a legal commercial transaction scale. Certification status comes from the approved model/configuration and legal metrology program, not from how accurately an individual owner can adjust a non-certified balance.
