A&D HD-30KA 60 lb / 30 kg Economical Counting Scale Guide

A&D HD-30KA is an economical 60 lb / 30 kg counting scale designed for cycle counting, physical inventory, kitting and packing when a simple high-capacity platform is more important than a large item database. Direct readability is 0.01 lb / 5 g. The current MNM/A&D specifications list 1 g minimum unit weight in standard 1/30,000 counting mode and 0.25 g in selectable 1/120,000 mode; those are average-piece counting thresholds, not 1 g or 0.25 g direct weighing resolution.

HD-30KA specifications

Capacity is 30 kg / 60 lb, direct readability 5 g / 0.01 lb, and the platform is approximately 300 × 380 mm (11.8 × 15 in). A&D lists sample sizes of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 or user-selectable values, approximately ±1 g linearity in the legacy/current U.S. specification, and an operating range of roughly -10°C to 40°C below 85% RH without condensation. The 300 × 380 mm stainless steel 430 platform accepts larger bins than compact counting scales.

KA simplicity versus KB keypad model

HD-30KA is the A-type model with a single display and simplified key operation. HD-30KB is the corresponding B-type with three display windows and a 10-digit keypad for direct unit-weight/sample entry. Choose KA when operators should have fewer controls and standardized sample-based counting; choose KB when frequent numeric entry is important.

ACAI improves average piece weight

Automatic Counting Accuracy Improvement recalculates unit weight when additional known pieces are added. This is especially useful when a 5- or 10-piece starting sample does not represent normal manufacturing variation. The manual explicitly recommends larger 25/50/100-piece samples for light or variable items. Fine mode changes the minimum storable unit weight but does not remove the need for enough total sample mass.

Comparator and accumulation

Built-in comparator logic can judge weight or count against upper/lower limits for packaging or filling. M+ accumulates piece-count results across containers or transactions. Key lock can limit operators to the controls required for the job. These simple production functions are a major reason HD remains useful despite not having GC-style databases or networking as standard.

Power and battery life

HD operates from the AC adapter, six C-cell batteries or the optional AD-1681 rechargeable NiCd pack. A&D U.S. lists approximately 200 hours with alkaline batteries and about 20 hours with the rechargeable pack at 20°C. This supports warehouse carts and temporary counting stations, but verify zero/known weight after moving the scale.

Optional communications

RS-232C is optional rather than standard on HD. HD-03/OP-03 provides serial data, HD-04/OP-04 comparator relay output, and HD-05/OP-05 current-loop serial output. AX-USB-25P can convert RS-232C to USB. Confirm which option slot/interface the station needs before purchase instead of assuming connectivity is included in the base KA model.

Calibration and legal-for-trade status

HD uses external/digital calibration through the protected CAL switch. After calibration, verify with independent known weights. A&D’s current U.S. HD product page presents the series for inventory/cycle counting and does not identify HD-30KA as an NTEP legal-for-trade model. Use an explicitly certified weighing device if a regulated commercial transaction is determined by weight.
