A&D SJ-12KHS for deli, bakery, produce, farmers markets and packaging gives operators a 26 lb / 12 kg portable platform with a large stainless pan and straightforward tare operation. Its Class III NTEP configuration is 26 lb × 0.01 lb, 12 kg × 5 g and 423 oz × 0.2 oz under CoC 10-001A1, while A&D’s current SJ-HS page identifies the family as NSF compliant. Those two facts make it useful both behind the scenes for food preparation and, when correctly sealed and placed into service, at commercial sale-by-weight stations.
Deli and prepared-food counters
Tare a tray, paper or reusable container before adding product, then wait for the stable reading. The 0.01 lb division is suitable for many deli and prepared-food sales where 26 lb capacity is sufficient. If the displayed weight determines customer price, keep the scale in its approved commercial configuration and follow local inspection/sealing requirements. If the scale is used only to portion food internally, the same hardware provides a simple QC station without needing advanced software.
Bakery and ingredient weighing
Twelve kilograms of capacity gives a bakery room for mixing bowls, dough pieces, fillings and larger ingredient containers. Five-gram metric readability is appropriate for many production batches but not for micro-ingredients. Yeast, flavor concentrates or additives requiring 0.1 g or 0.01 g measurement should be weighed on a precision balance. Use SJ-12KHS for the heavier part of the recipe instead of asking one scale to cover every resolution range.
Produce stands and farmers markets
Four D-cell operation and carrying handles make the scale useful where power is inconvenient. The 26 lb capacity fits herbs, produce baskets, specialty foods and many market containers. For sale by weight, check the correct legal unit, zero before each transaction and maintain the required NTEP seal. Battery power also reduces cord hazards at temporary market booths.
Packaging and fulfillment checks
For internal packaging, an expected total-weight range can reveal missing components or underfilled product. SJ-12KHS does not have comparator lights or automatic data output, so it is best for stations where an operator can read the display directly. If every package needs automatic pass/fail lights, printer records or networked data, select a checkweighing platform designed for those functions.
Receiving and inventory
The scale can check incoming boxes, ingredient containers or bulk material up to 26 lb. Make sure the load sits safely on the 9.1 × 7.5 inch pan and does not touch a wall, conveyor rail or table edge. For inventory systems that require automated data transfer, SJ-HS is not the best choice because it has no standard serial or USB interface. Its strength is quick, local, portable weighing.
Food cleaning limits
The removable SUS304 pan supports hygienic cleaning, but SJ-HS is a dry-use compact bench scale rather than an IP-rated washdown model. Remove the pan when appropriate, clean it with food-compatible methods, wipe the housing and keep liquid out of the battery/electronics areas. If sanitation requires hose-down or temporary immersion, choose the SJ-WP family instead.
Choosing between SJ-12KHS and washdown or data-enabled models
SJ-12KHS is a strong fit when the priorities are portability, food-oriented construction, simple tare and legal-for-trade capability. Choose SJ-WP for wet sanitation, HV-C for richer checkweighing and interfaces, EK-i for smaller precision/parts work, or a larger floor/bench scale when loads regularly exceed 26 lb. Selecting around environment and workflow is more important than choosing solely by capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Can SJ-12KHS be used at a farmers market? Yes, and its battery operation is useful there. Can it legally sell product by weight? Yes in the Class III configuration, subject to local placement-in-service and sealing. Is it good for bakery batches? Yes when 5 g readability is sufficient. Is it washdown? No. Does tare increase physical capacity? No; bowl plus product must stay under 12 kg. Does it transmit data automatically? No standard interface. What if I need tighter than 5 g? Choose a precision balance sized for the smaller ingredient.
