A&D SJ-12KHS calibration and verification should start with the installation, not the CAL function. The scale is specified at 12 kg × 5 g and MNM lists a 10 kg calibration mass, while the U.S. Class III NTEP configuration is 26 lb × 0.01 lb / 12 kg × 5 g under CoC 10-001A1. For an internal process unit, external calibration can be part of the user quality system. For a scale already placed into commercial service, protected calibration access and the physical seal must be respected; routine operators should verify performance without breaking that seal.
Level, clear and stabilize the scale
Place the scale on a rigid surface, adjust the feet until level and make sure the pan is seated correctly. Remove any tray, packaging film, labels or debris beneath the pan. Make sure a large bowl does not touch the counter, backsplash or another object. If the scale was moved from a cold vehicle or storage room, allow the entire unit and reference weight to reach the working environment before checking calibration.
External calibration with a 10 kg reference
MNM lists 10 kg as the calibration mass. Use a known reference appropriate to the quality requirement, center it on the pan and follow the manufacturer calibration sequence with no surrounding contact or vibration. A gym weight, food container or another unverified scale is not an appropriate calibration standard when traceability matters. After adjustment, remove the reference and confirm that zero returns normally.
Verification after calibration
Calibration changes the span relationship; verification checks whether the scale now meets the requirement. Use an independent known weight in the typical working range. For a broad application, check a lighter, middle and heavier point. Repeat at least one value several times. If results are inconsistent, identify vibration, temperature, battery or mechanical issues before performing another calibration cycle.
Commercial verification without breaking the seal
For a legally placed Class III unit, verify zero and known test weights while leaving protected calibration access intact. If verification fails, check the surface, pan, load contact, batteries and test weights first. If adjustment is genuinely required, use qualified service and follow local weights-and-measures requirements for resealing or reinspection. NTEP type approval and good calibration are related but separate controls.
Corner and eccentric-loading checks
Place the same known load in the center and representative positions around the 230 × 190 mm pan. Large position-dependent differences can indicate a mis-seated pan, rocking base, frame damage or surrounding contact. Recalibrating at the center cannot fix a mechanical eccentric-load problem. If off-center performance is outside your process tolerance, correct the mechanical setup or arrange service.
Zero drift and failure to return to zero
Unload the scale fully. Look for crumbs, labels, stretch film or a bowl edge touching the bench. Confirm level and allow the scale to stabilize after temperature change. Check battery condition. Use zero only when the platform is truly unloaded; repeated zeroing can hide a physical offset. If zero still moves under controlled conditions, verify with a known weight and arrange service if necessary.
Battery and power troubleshooting
SJ-12KHS uses four D cells or the optional AC adapter. Current A&D literature gives about 2,000 hours with alkaline batteries. Replace all batteries together when power becomes suspect. If instability occurs only on battery power, inspect the cells and contacts. If it occurs only on AC, verify the correct adapter and connector. Power symptoms should be isolated before adjusting calibration.
Cleaning-related problems
Because SJ-HS is not the IP67 SJ-WP family, keep water out of the scale body and electronics. Remove and clean the stainless pan using compatible methods, wipe the housing and ensure everything is dry before use. If zero changes immediately after cleaning, inspect pan seating and trapped moisture or debris before recalibrating.
