A&D SJ-5001HS food scale combines a 5000 g capacity, 1 g readability, stainless pan and approximately one-second stabilization in a portable footprint. Those features make it a practical production tool when the job requires repeatable portions or package weights but does not need the complexity of a larger industrial platform scale.
Food preparation and portion control
Use tare to zero a bowl, tray or container, then add product to a target net weight. One-gram readability is fine enough for many ingredient and portion-control jobs while the 5 kg capacity leaves room for containers and batch ingredients. For a controlled recipe, define an acceptable range rather than expecting every portion to land on one exact display number.
Packaging and small parcel work
The 230 × 190 mm pan handles many small cartons, pouches and product containers. Keep bulky packages centered and avoid contact with the bench around the scale. For shipping charges, confirm that the scale and resolution meet the carrier or commercial requirements that apply; this general-purpose model should not be assumed to have a trade approval that A&D does not publish for it.
Inventory and kitting
Weight-based inventory checks can work when components have consistent unit mass and the required precision fits 1 g readability. For very small fasteners or components, a dedicated counting scale with finer resolution may provide better count accuracy. The SJ-5001HS is strongest as a straightforward weight scale rather than a high-resolution parts counter.
Portable battery-powered stations
Four D batteries and two carrying handles let the scale move between prep tables, packing stations, receiving and temporary work areas. A&D's current literature advertises about 2,000 hours of alkaline-battery use under stated conditions, which can minimize cord management in mobile setups.
Cleaning the food-contact area
The removable SUS304 pan is the part designed for easy cleaning. Remove and clean it using the facility's approved method, then dry and reinstall it correctly. Do not flood the scale housing or assume NSF compliance means the electronics are washdown-rated. After reassembly, confirm zero and free pan movement.
Daily verification
For a production station, a quick start-of-shift check can include level, zero, one known mass near the normal operating range, repeatability and return to zero. If the scale is moved frequently, check it after relocation because bench level and vibration can change.
Avoid these common application mistakes
Do not exceed 5 kg capacity, drop product onto the pan, weigh a container that rests partly on the surrounding bench, assume the 1 g display digit equals 1 g total uncertainty, or use the scale for regulated commercial transactions without verifying approval requirements. These simple mistakes cause more problems than most menu settings.
FAQ
Is 1 g resolution enough for portion control?
For many food and packing jobs, yes. The process tolerance should be comfortably larger than the scale's practical measurement uncertainty.
Can I weigh directly on the stainless pan?
The pan is stainless and NSF compliant, but your food-safety program determines whether direct contact or a sanitary liner/container is appropriate.
Does the scale have a battery indicator?
Yes. A&D lists a remaining-battery status indicator.
Can it switch to pounds and ounces?
Yes. A&D supports g, oz, lb and lb-oz on the SJ-HS family.
Can I use it outdoors?
Temporary sheltered use may be practical within operating conditions, but the model is not presented by A&D as a weatherproof washdown scale. Protect it from rain, direct sun and wind.
What if my packages are larger than the pan?
A small overhang can be workable only if the package remains stable and touches nothing else. For routinely large cartons, use a larger platform scale.
